SEL Day took place on Friday, March 8, 2024
The end of the day in the classroom can be the best time to integrate some social-emotional skills.
Lake Hiawatha School on SEL Day
This year's theme was "Today's Students, Tomorrow's Leaders." We started with the 5th graders coloring and putting together a mosaic style collaboration poster that highlights famous leaders in history who led with a growth mindset. Then the entire school (Pre-K-5th) took part in a large-scale tessellation project. Each student colored and designed a human figure with attributes that represented themselves. Then, with patience and precision, staff members and classmates worked together to piece the figures together so that all would be connected. The banner portion read, 'We Are All Connected. ¡Todos Estamos Conectados!'. Each class set of people were in some way connected to the next and we collaborated throughout the day to build our display. The teamwork/collaboration and art work brought us all together to celebrate the leaders of the past and our leaders of the future.
Mrs. Nagel at PHHS got creative with her chemistry classes, which recently explored concepts of unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions. During SEL day, students worked in pairs to make and transition a solution of sodium acetate from unsaturated to saturated to supersaturated. Once the supersaturated solution was established, students added a seed crystal to demonstrate how the supersaturated solution was unstable. Students then went onto Google Classroom and answered the questions listed below. Class ended with a group discussion of the different techniques students use to best manage stress/emotions.
When do you tend to feel like you're a bit like a supersaturated solution?
You know, when there's so much going on that it feels like you're on the verge of a 'precipitation' of emotions or experiences?
Share a time when you felt emotionally 'saturated' or "supersaturated" (overwhelmed), and what you did to best find your balance or 'dissolve' those feelings to achieve stability?
Mt. Tabor SEL Day
What Fills Our Pot of Gold? Five "I AM" statements in the rainbow and at 5 things in their life that make them happy and "fills their pot of gold".
Mt. Tabor SEL Day
Mt. Tabor continued the Pot of Gold project with STEM Group work: Building an LED Paper Circuit and making their Pot of Gold Light Up.
Northvail SEL Day
4th graders read aloud, "The Day You Begin," and learned it takes confidence and courage to share with others about our differences. Students then created a coat of arms to share about themselves, and problem-solved to create a stand to hold their badge using pipe cleaners and cardboard.
Rockaway Meadow SEL Day
5th grade class made SEL conversation cubes, and then put them to the test.
Eastlake SEL Day
The book "Where Oliver Fits," inspired this puzzle poster where "Everyone Fits!"
Brooklawn Middle School SEL Day
6th graders wrote a positive affirmation on a face template then designed & colored them.
PHS students collaborated to create a motivational mural reminding everyone that “It's not about where you are now... but rather where you want to go”. Students first crafted individual pieces of the mural and then came together as one to construct the final image. Each class discussed the importance of recognizing our combined talents and strengths as a learning community and working towards achieving a common goal.
Above are pictures from DEAR time and buddy reading with fourth grade. The activity we did was a read aloud. The book was "The Smart Cookie" about how we are all different and smart in our own way. The students then colored their cookie and wrote 3 ways in which they are smart.
Our School Is Full Of Lucky Charms
Littleton conducted a school-wide activity called Our School Is Full Of Lucky Charms in recognition of National SEL Day on March 8th, 2024. Littleton was given the opportunity to share ways of being lucky;
I am lucky that I can...
I am lucky that I am...
I am lucky that I know...
I am lucky that I have...
Each class received a different color lucky charm to show unity at Littleton School, then charms were placed at the front entrance (picture to the left).
Students hitting a mid-year slump? Need some ideas to get them motivated?
