MUS 700 Advanced Placement Music Theory

Grades 10-12 [Approval of Course Instructor Teacher Recommendation preferred]

This is an Advanced Placement course in music theory developed by the College Board. The focus of the course is the in-depth study and analysis of music from the Renaissance to the present, using the rudiments of music (scales, intervals, chorales, harmonic vocabulary). Also integrated are techniques of four-part writing and orchestration, counterpoint and fugue, extensive listening experiences, and some keyboard application. This course will prepare students for the Advanced Placement Music Theory Examination. WEIGHTED COURSE


MUS 740 Music Theory

Grade 9-12

Students in Music Theory class will gain technical knowledge and skills as well as familiarity with a wide variety of music including European classical, jazz and popular music and music of other (non-western) cultures. Critical thinking will be emphasized in composition skills, harmonization, and arranging exercises, and analysis of original works created by students.


MUS 770 Guitar 1

Grades 9-12

Guitar I is a semester elective course offered for students at the high school level, who do not have prior musical or guitar experience. Students will learn the fundamentals and basic skills of guitar playing in a hands-on classroom setting. The class will be exposed to a variety of tools and resources for guitar playing, as well as many different musical styles and techniques to become beginner level guitar players. Emphasis is placed on proper playing technique, music theory and notation, and developing the student musician through performance. Students will also learn about the history of the guitar and become familiar with different genres and composers of music so that they are able to make real world connections.


MUS 771 Guitar 2

Grades 9-12

Guitar II is a semester elective course offered for students at the high school level, who have previously taken Guitar I. Students will further develop the fundamentals and basic skills of guitar playing in a hands-on classroom setting. The class will be exposed to a variety of tools and resources for guitar playing, as well as many different musical styles and techniques to become intermediate level guitar players. Emphasis is placed on proper playing technique, music theory and notation, and developing the student musician through performance. Students will also learn about the history of the guitar and become familiar with different genres and composers of music so that they are able to make real world connections.


MUS 780 Piano 1

Grades 9-12

Piano I is a semester elective course offered for students at the high school level, who do not have prior musical or piano experience. Students will learn the fundamentals and basic skills of piano playing in a hands-on classroom setting. The class will be exposed to a variety of tools and resources for piano playing, as well as many different musical styles and techniques to become beginner level piano players. Emphasis is placed on proper playing technique, music theory and notation, and developing the student musician through performance. Students will also learn about the history of the piano and become familiar with different genres and composers of music so that they are able to make real world connections.


MUS 781 Piano 2

Grades 9-12

Piano II is a semester elective course offered for students at the high school level, who have previously taken Piano I. Students will further develop the fundamentals and basic skills of piano playing in a hands-on classroom setting. MUS 790 Music Production & Audio Engineering I

Grades 9-12

Music Production & Audio Engineering I is a semester elective course offered for students at the high school level. This course is designed to teach students the technical aspect of creating and producing music. It will include the utilization of hardware for the creation of musical content. Concepts taught in this course will consist of audio production, MIDI sequencing, sampling, and synthesis using various forms of software, through a series of project-based learning activities with the goal of providing students with exposure to performing with electronic instruments, multi-track recording and mixing, copyright laws, basic Music Theory, and physical principles of sound. Students will learn the fundamentals of recording, mixing and producing audio. Lessons incorporating the introduction and explanation of microphones , Audio Effects, Interfaces and Sound Boards, DAWS (Digital Audio Editing, Stereo/Mono/Dolby Atmos/5.1), Speakers, and Audio Mixing and Mastering.


MUS 791 Music Production & Audio Engineering II

Grades 9-12

Music Production & Audio Engineering II is a semester elective course offered for students at the high school level who have completed Music Production & Audio Engineering I. This course is designed to further develop the basic skills learned in Music Production & Audio Engineering I. The class will focus on the utilization of advanced hardware for the creation of musical content, using a series of project-based learning activities with the goal of providing students with advanced technical knowledge and comprehension of performing with electronic instruments, recording live vocal and instrumental performances, multi-track recording (live and electronic), and basic knowledge of the music production industry. Students will take the lessons taught regarding Audio/Music Production from Music I and apply it in Music Production & Audio Engineering II, by demonstrating proper technique by recording and producing concerts, studio recordings, and drama club productions.
