Weeks 9 and 10

WALT: learn about NZ history through a graphic novel

Instructions:

  1. Vocabulary Deep Diving: As a group, we will discuss a few vocabulary words from the story.
  2. Listen to the story and read along.
  3. Read the story again, and take note of the various people, places and events discussed in the story on this padlet. Be sure you do not add names that are already there.
  4. Create Task: Using the list of poeple, places, events created while reading, research to decide which were fictional and which were non-fiction. Create a DLO, to share on your blog telling people about the historical events that took place during that time.
  5. Link your learning task to the Turn In Sheet.
  6. Post your learning task to your blog. Be sure to include 2-3 sentences explaining what you read or learnt while reading.


Weeks 7 and 8

WALT: extend our vocabulary by identifying unknown words while reading

Instructions:

  1. As a group, watch the video together and discuss the key ideas.
  2. Vocabulary Deep Diving: As a group, we will discuss a few vocabulary words from the transcript.
  3. Finish reading the transcript with a partner, while note taking. Be sure to circle any words you are unsure of.
  4. Complete the Learning Task
  5. Link your learning task to the Turn In Sheet.
  6. Post your learning task to your blog. Be sure to include 2-3 sentences explaining what you read or learnt while reading.


Week 6

WALT: identify and use key information from a text to write a summary

Instructions:

  1. Vocabulary Deep Dive with Mrs. Moala
  2. Read "The Return of the Moa"
  3. Discuss the story with your reading group.
  4. Complete the Learning Task
  5. Create: Pick an extinct animal from pages 20-21 and decide what the pros/cons would be for bringing it back to life. In your own creative way, present your decisions. Be sure to give examples and facts to support your reasons. (Video, Vlog, Slide show animation, Hyperstudio animation, Interview, Talk Show, Google Drawing Poster, etc)
  6. Link your learning task to the Turn In Sheet.
  7. Post your learning task to your blog. Be sure to include 2-3 sentences explaining what you read or learnt while reading.


Weeks 4/5

WALT: identify and use key information from a text to write a summary

Instructions:

  1. 1. As a class, watch the video, My Genome Sequence

2. Share with your partner what you learnt while watching.

3. Keeping the things you discussed in mind, read through the transcript, and take notes highlighting the important parts from the text.

4. Using only your notes, write a summary paragraph or two to post on your blog to show what you and your partner have learnt.


Week 3

WALT: critically think about the author's perspective

Instructions:

  1. Brainstorm with Mrs. Moala what we already know about pseudoscience.
  2. Watch the video and discuss what we learn about pseudoscience.
  3. Read the text "Pseudoscience"
  4. Complete the Learning Task
  5. Read the "Ribena" and "Nurofen" articles
  6. Link your learning task to the Turn In Sheet.
  7. Post your learning task to your blog. Be sure to include 2-3 sentences explaining what you read or learnt while reading.

Week 2

WALT: identify key information in a text.

Instructions:

  1. Brainstorm with Mrs. Moala what we already know about Science.
  2. Watch the video and discuss what we learn about science.
  3. Working with the paper article Mrs. Moala hands out, what do you think are the important bits of information? Highlight them and then paraphrase in the column on the right.
  4. Your learning task is to complete your note taking assignment by:
    • Reading and underling or highlighting important information in the text (e.g. the topic sentence or key words/phrases.)
    • Adding headings and noting down trigger words in the right column that will help you retell each paragraph
  5. Link your learning task to the Turn In Sheet.
  6. Post your learning task to your blog. Be sure to include 2-3 sentences explaining what you read or learnt while reading.

Week 1

WALT: Identify fact and fiction in a text

Instructions:

  1. Discuss with Mrs. Moala the vocabulary brainstorm and then complete the assignment following the instructions provided in class.
  2. Read "Richard Owen's GIANT Mystery" and discuss with Mrs. Moala before completing the Learning Task with your group.
  3. Watch the video "5 Fun Experiments"
  4. Using what you learnt while watching the video, complete the learning task. Be sure to check back with the video as needed.
  5. CREATE: Using what you have learnt this week, go back to our vocabulary brainstorm and create a Google Docs Infographic to display your understanding. Mrs. Moala will give more information about this during class.
  6. Link your learning task to the Turn In Sheet.
  7. Post your learning task to your blog. Be sure to include 2-3 sentences explaining what you read or learnt while reading.
