Classroom Handbook
All About Me:
This will be my 17th year of teaching. I spent 15 years teaching kindergarten at a previous school. This is my second year of teaching 3rd grade here at PTAA. I am excited to get to know you and your child this year.
I have been married for 26 years to my husband, Charles. We have two wonderful boys. Christopher is 23 and is a recent graduate from UCCS with a degree in Sports Management. Brennan is 18 and just graduated high school from Pikes Peak Early College. He is taking a year 13 to finish is associates degree.
We have three miniature dachshunds who rule the house. Max is 16, Nala is 3 and Landy is 2. When I am not teaching, I like to crochet, create mosaics, workout and read books. We are huge Colorado Avalanche fans!
Take Home Folder: Each night your child will bring home a take home folder. The sides are marked for items to be left and home what needs to come right back to school. There will also be a monthly calendar that needs to be left in there. This is how I will communicate how your child's day has been.
Behavior Management and Conduct Marks:
I have 5 rules we use in our classroom to help things run smoothly. They are:
Follow Directions Quickly and Quietly
Raise Your Hand for Permission to Speak
Raise Your Hand for Permission to Leave Your Seat
Make Smart Choices
Make Our Dear Team Stronger
I use a lot of positive reinforcement in class to help motivate the kids during the day. I will give reminders as to what expectations are as well. Sometimes, those reminders don’t work and will give a check mark on the desk. This can help to serve as a visual reminder of how our days is going. If your child receives three check marks, I will give a conduct mark. Your child is allowed to get three conduct marks in a month before I give lunch detention. I will send home a Remind message and mark it on the calendar in their take home folder. Please keep the calendar in the folder as this is how I communicate with you.
Contact Information:
Here is how to get ahold of me:
Email: mrolater@ptaa.org
Remind App:
I will be sending home a weekly newsletter to keep you updated on what to expect in the classroom.
Please utilize the Remind App for small communication items such as a change in dismissal.
I will try to respond to emails within 24 hours.
Homework:
I try to not give a whole lot of homework. That being said, there will be times when a class project comes home or something else along those lines.
If your child is absent, I will be sending home math homework. For each day your child is absent, they will have one day to complete and return the work. After that time, the work will become a zero in the gradebook.
Clever: I will be sending home your child’s Clever badge with directions on how to sign in. There may be times when I ask that your child complete something through Clever for homework. Through Clever, the kids can access IXL, Google Classroom as well as the Math and ELA curriculum. I will also be adding different applications to my teacher page for the kids to utilize. By signing into IXL once a week from home, this can be a great tool for extra reinforcement of skills that we use in class.
Birthdays:
We love to celebrate your child. If you send home invitations, please send in enough for the whole class. Due to allergies and nutritional guidelines, no food can be sent in for treats. We welcome treat bags!
Snacks: We will have a small snack in the morning. Please send your child to school with a nut free snack. As the year progresses, I will be asking for snack donations to keep items on hand.
Water bottles: Please send your child to school a water bottle, filled only with water, each day. The weather is hot and we need to stay hydrated.
