Established in 1964 under the leadership of Late H.C. Ganguli, the Department of Psychology, University of Delhi, operates under the Faculty of Arts, North Campus. The South Campus was added in 1973 as part of the multi-campus system.
Currently headed by Prof. Urmi Nanda Biswas, the department has two units: North Campus, offering M.A. Psychology, and South Campus, offering M.A. Applied Psychology. This year, the department offers two specializations: Clinical Psychology and Organizational Behavior.
With a rich 55+ year history, the department connects academia with industries and organizations such as hospitals, NGOs, and corporate sectors. It regularly organizes conferences, seminars, and workshops to align with emerging research trends and enhance faculty and student growth.
The department has achieved remarkable milestones through research projects like Cognitive Science (DST-funded), Resilience and Entrepreneurship (RGNIYD-supported), and Human Motivation in Academics (IoE-funded). The UGC awarded it the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) with Departmental Research Support (DRS) in 1989, renewed through 2016–2023. Contributions to Positive Youth Development (RGNIYD) and advancements in Cognitive Psychology (DST and CSIR-funded) reflect its dedication to innovative research and advancing the field of psychology.

The Training and Placement Cell aims to enhance the holistic career development and employment opportunities for students of the department. The cell serves both the North and South campuses, dedicated to bridging the gap between academia and industry. Our primary goal is to enhance the employability of students by offering various skill development trainings and creating meaningful connections with industry leaders. The T&P Cell actively works towards providing job opportunities for our students by fostering relationships with recruiters and organizations. The Outreach team is responsible for identifying potential organizations of interest, opening contacts with their recruiters, and converting these cold leads into potential collaborations.
The training and skill development team is responsible for identifying the training needs of the students, building relations with industry experts and resource persons, conducting training workshops, lectures and seminars relevant to the domains of Psychology.
The placement coordination team forms the backend of the Placement Cell, and is responsible for all the direct coordination with recruiters once an organization gets in touch for collaboration, either for internships or placements.
The social media coordinators are responsible for managing the Placement cell's digital presence. This involves creating & posting quality content on its social media channels and managing the social media pages.
The placement process begins with the outreach team contacting organizations for opportunities. Interested organizations then express their interest and submit details about available roles. This information is shared with eligible students, who may attend an optional pre-placement talk to learn more. Students then submit their applications via a Google Form, after which the organization conducts its selection process, coordinated by the placement cell. Selected students receive offer letters, keeping the cell informed, and finally, students decide whether to accept or decline the offer, notifying the cell of their decision.
