Golden Eagle Gazette

Weeks of January 30 & February 6, 2017

Dear DHSHS Community,

The second semester has started off strong as I've observed some great work in the classrooms that I've visited. In addition, our student activities, especially the Talent Show and Rock Off Rally, have stirred our school spirit after the Winter Break. Our sports teams are becoming more competitive and there's a drive and energy in the air as we are all working towards our school mission: DHSHS inspires and empowers all Golden Eagles for success.

This past weekend, I spent at a retreat for principals in Dallas, Texas refining my skills to help empower all of you to do your best work and hopefully being quietly inspirational behind the scenes.

One of the "Moves that Matter" we discussed was "Up Their Game." In short, it is a strategy where one thinks about actions that will help someone be even better in the work that they do. So for the month of February, i'll be focused on how I can help and support you to be more successful in meeting our school goals for our students, our community, and ourselves. If you know of any way I can help you "Up Your Game," Please let me know!

P.S. If you're having a little trouble getting students to focus and remain on task, check out this infographic I found on Pinterest: 10 Ways to Sabotage Your Classroom Management

PHOTOS: Remember to send me your photos from your classroom, event, activity, etc. for focus on our homepage and/or Gazette.

IDS: Please remember that the Lead Teachers and Leadership Team expect each first period teacher to check for a visible (on lanyard, not in pocket, backpack, etc.) each and every day. During first period, students without an ID should be sent to Room 202 / Ms. Barraza. Periods 2-6, teachers should send the names of students without an ID to Carolyn and an administrator will follow up.

ATTENDANCE: Continue to take attendance during the first 10 minutes of class.

GRADES: Remember to enter a minimum of one grade per student in your gradebook per week.

PASSES: Remember, the only valid passes from a classroom are the student's planner page for the day's date filled out and initialed at the bottom of the day's column. If a student does not have a planner with them, they cannot leave the class. If it's an emergency, tell the student they will need to spend the number of minutes out with you during passing period, lunch or before/after school.

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS: Remember it is the teacher's responsibility to keep their class during morning announcements (even if some students do not want to pay attention, others do).

A veteran teacher recently shared with me that this book was exceptional and he highly recommended it to colleagues. It just so happens that we have it in the library for check out or book study. Let me know if you are interested in organizing a book study (compensated collaboration) on Fostering Resilient Learners.
