Brief History of Palawan SU Bataraza Campus
Tertiary Education was not yet offered until 2004 at the farthest municipality of mainland Southern Palawan, thus the desire of the parents to set up tertiary education elevated calling for the Sangguniang Bayan to pass resolution No. 47 s. 2004 on July 19, 2004, the Municipal Mayor entered into an agreement with the PSU for the establishment of CCRD Bataraza and it has been solidified for it became the flagship program of Hon. Abraham M. Ibba, the municipal mayor. For the move to push through the PSU community headed by Dr. Hanlie A. Taha, the first director of the campus borrowed and asked permission from the Muslim Association to use the old mosque and the other three classrooms in which one was used for administrative functions to cater the schooling needs and also to start its operation. With its four (4) faculty members, one (1) staff and one hundred thirteen (113) as number of students together with initial funding of Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (Php 500,000.00) from the local government, it has started its course. Programs distributions at that time were ladderized engineering courses namely Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship, and Bachelor of Elementary Education.
In 2006, there sprouted kindhearted individuals with greater concern for education. The Chan family of Brooke’s Point, Palawan donated a 2-hectare lot on March 13, 2006, to be used as a school site (inclusive of the pathway from the National Highway leading to the campus) for PSU Bataraza then it was erected by Rio Tuba Nickel Foundation, Inc. (RTNFI) and Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) with a building of 4 classrooms. In that same year also, the Municipal Grant was doubled, thus prompting the university to improve its utilities and operation by adding more professionals to handle subjects in various fields as the curriculum requires and made them function more effectively.
A lot more have been developed and are still to be developed, yet without sacrificing the quality and standards set forth of being a university. The data magnify the graduates the campus was able to produce. Twelve professional teachers have been produced for they passed the Licensure Examination administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) added to the 5 students of Electrical Engineering Technology who also passed the Electrical Licensure Examination given by the TESDA. Some students venture for continuity at the main campus or at PSU Brooke’s Point and other seeks to land the job.
The PSU Bataraza Campus in its present site at Barangay Inogbong, Bataraza continues to deliver quality education and to be of help to the community as envisioned in the university’s vision and mission. Campus development has been possible as parents, faculty and staff, and the local government support each other hand in hand just to make a significant change. Courses offered such as BEED, MET, EET, BSBA-Marketing Management, and Entrepreneurship are indeed addressing the needs of the community.
