I am excited to meet all of you and learn from one another. Please bookmark this liquid syllabus so you can easily access it. CAS 100A is a three-credit course. In college, one credit course equals to 50 minutes. A 3-credit course means that in a week, you are going to meet for 150 minutes in class and spend approximately 6 hours doing outside work (E.g. homework, reading, research for the class).

Below is a tentative course schedule for the course. Here you will see assignment deadlines, readings, and learning activities you will do for each class meeting. Consult the course schedule below to plan your time.
I am also a big believer of collaboration and process. So, in this class expect to experience many collaborative writing process where we will learn from one another and make each other better in the process.
What does an effective speech look like? How can I prepare myself to be a better speaker? How does ‘knowing the audience’ help me to become a better speaker? What kind of research should I do to prepare for better researched-based presentation? These are some of the questions that we are going to address in this course. What makes an ‘Effective speech’ is not a ‘one-size-fits-all all’ thing. It varies according to topic, context, and audience. To be a better speaker takes preparation, process and practice. And that is what we are going to learn in this course.
In this course, you are going to deliver three different presentations:
Informative Presentation
Research Presentation
Poster Presentation
The grade for these speeches will be based on a combination of group- and/or individual performance.
analyze the rhetorical situation and effectiveness of oral presentation
research a topic for effective oral presentation.
work collaboratively to prepare and research content for oral presentation
effectively prepare and deliver effective oral presentations according to a particular genre and specific audience.
