I am at my best teaching students how to do hypothesis-driven research in field settings.  My course combines active learning with a biologically immersive overseas experience that challenges students to expand their comfort zone.

Biol 499: Tropical Field Ecology

Semester: Spring (happens during winter break, Dec 27 - Jan11)

Offered annually since 1993

Applications become available in late August or early September, with a late Sept target date for selecting the class.

My indispensible Costa Rican colleagues: Prof. Jose Manuel Mora; Prof. Eduardo Carrillo, Prof. Jennifer Stynoski

Prior to taking on a large service roll as an Associate Director of the Huck Institutes, I also taught Physiological Ecology (Biol 446) and Critical Evaluation of Biological Literature (Biol 597).  When I first began at PSU my first teaching assignment was BiSci 3, an Environmental Science course for non-majors.  It was an 8am  class with 600 students in Schwab Auditiorium.  Students in the balcony put their feet up on the railing and leaned back, able to see the projector screen but not me, and I could only see the soles of their shoes.
