LLM Chat Exporter is a Chrome browser extension built to support an academic research study on human interaction with AI assistants. This policy explains what the extension does, what data it accesses, and how that data is handled.
LLM Chat Exporter lets a user capture a conversation from ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, review it, redact any messages they do not want to share, and export the result as a JSON file. The user then uploads that file to a research survey as part of their voluntary participation in a study.
When a user opens a supported chat page (chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, claude.ai, or gemini.google.com) and clicks the extension, it reads the conversation text displayed on that page. This includes the user's own messages and the AI assistant's responses.
- The captured conversation, so it can be displayed on the review page.
- A participant ID that the user types in, so it can be included in the exported file and does not need to be re-entered.
The extension does not access any other browsing activity, any other website, passwords, financial information, health information, or location data. It does not track clicks, keystrokes, or mouse movement.
- The extension does not transmit any data to a server. There is no backend associated with this extension.
- The extension does not use analytics, advertising identifiers, or any third-party tracking service.
- The extension does not sell, rent, or share data with third parties.
- The extension does not use collected data for any purpose beyond letting the user review and export their own conversation.
All processing happens locally in the user's browser. The only output the extension produces is a JSON file saved to the user's own computer through Chrome's standard download mechanism. That file is not sent anywhere by the extension. If the user chooses to upload the file to a research survey, that upload is a separate, deliberate action taken by the user outside the extension, to a survey platform such as Google Forms or Qualtrics operated by the research team.
If a user redacts a message before exporting, the original text of that message is discarded and is never written to the exported file. The export only marks that a message existed and was removed at that position in the conversation.
Locally stored data (the captured conversation and participant ID) remains in the browser's local storage until the user removes the extension, clears the browser's site data, or a new conversation is scanned, which replaces the previously stored capture. The extension developer has no access to this locally stored data.
This extension was developed for use in an IRB-approved research study. Participation is voluntary. Questions about the study itself, including how submitted data is stored, used, or protected by the research team after upload, should be directed to the study's contact listed in the consent materials provided at enrollment, not to this privacy policy.
If this policy is updated, the "Last updated" date above will change. Any material changes affecting how data is handled will also be reflected in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
