What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is an outdoor adventure activity where people use a GPS device or a smartphone to hide and seek small containers called “Geocaches.”
These caches are hidden all around the world in parks, neighborhoods, and natural areas. Each Geocache has coordinates that lead players to its location, and inside you might find a logbook to sign and sometimes small items for trading.
Geocaching is like a real-life treasure hunt that helps people explore new places, practice navigation skills, and work together to solve clues and find hidden treasures.
Five Things All Geocachers Need to Know!
Use GPS or a Geocaching app: Geocachers use a smartphone or GPS device to follow coordinates that lead them to a hidden cache. Learning how to read a map and follow directions is key. When you arrive at the location, put away your device and put on your critical thinking hat - the Geocache is likely right in front of you, staring back!
Sign the logbook: When you find a cache, open it and sign your name (and date) in the logbook to show you found it.
Trade fairly (“Take something, leave something”): If the cache has small items inside, you can take one only if you leave something of equal or greater value.
Hide it as you found it: After you’re done, put the cache back exactly where and how you found it so the next person can enjoy the hunt. Beware "Muggles", or people around the cache location who don't know about the game, as they won't understand what is going on!
Be respectful and safe: Stay aware of your surroundings, respect nature and private property, and always follow rules so everyone can have fun Geocaching safely.
