The Tavelli Library is unique; not only can you find great books here, but there are many other activities as well. A day in the Tavelli Library starts with Dream Team students reading books together. After Dream Team ends at 8:00, students passing through the library in the morning are treated to various students jamming in The Quarry to start their day while they browse our book collection, code, design or build at our maker table. Grades K-1 have story time here every class period before they have the opportunity to check out books and then go to computer lab class. Second graders will have story time an opportunity to check out books every other Media/Technology class period. We are open all day for book checkout for grades 3-5.

Students moving their memes up the AR mountain as they get closer to their independent reading goals. Students start at the bottom of the mountain and work their way up each quarter.
Every quarter, students who have a reading level above 1.0 are encouraged to reach their independent reading goal using a program called Accelerated Reader (AR). Students should pick books that are in their reading zone determined by their STAR Reading test. Books in our library have color coded dots on their lower spine that determine their difficulty levels. After reading each book, students take an online AR quiz. After passing each quiz, students get closer to their goal. Once their goal is met, students are encouraged to double it, triple it, or more! Students receive points and prizes for reaching and exceeding their goal. Parents, click here to visit your student's AR page so you can view their progress. Click the sign in with Clever option, and sign in with your student's PSD email address and password.
Battle of the Books is a motivational reading program sponsored by the Alaska Association of School Libraries (AKASL). The goals of the program are simply to encourage students to enjoy reading and to broaden their reading interests.
Lists of books are chosen for grades 3, 4, and 5. Students form teams of 3-5 students. They read the books, discuss them, and quiz each other on the contents. Each team needs to have one or more parents/guardians/responsible adults to act as coach(es) who keeps the team organized and motivated along the way. Practice questions are available for teams to use in preparation for the school and district Battles. The Battles are in a game show format with all the teams from each grade to see which team answers the most questions correctly.
Sign up for BOB begins NOW! If your child is interested in participating, he or she will need to turn in ONE registration form with all team members listed on it, along with the coach’s name and phone number. Once the registration form is turned in, teams can begin checking out Battle books. Additional information will be made available to teams and coaches to help them prepare for the competition. Each coach will receive a packet with practice questions, book lists, etc. before your first practice on November 5th.
You will also need to sign a Permission Slip for your child that allows him/her to participate in Battle of the Books this year.
Visit our Renee Walden Memorial Kiosk to find some great books. These have been picked by teachers and students and are often seasonal.
