Color Guard is a ceremonial unit within JROTC that presents and honors the American flag and other official colors at school, community, and military events. Comprised of disciplined cadets, the Color Guard team performs formal flag ceremonies with precision, pride, and professionalism. Members are trained in drill and ceremony, flag etiquette, and team coordination, serving as a visible symbol of respect, tradition, and the core values of JROTC—leadership, citizenship, and patriotism.
The Commander, who carries the American flag (also called the national colors), holds the most important position in the Color Guard. This role requires utmost respect, responsibility, and precision. The Commander leads the team during ceremonies, ensuring proper presentation and protection of the flag at all times. Their posture, discipline, and attention to detail set the standard for the entire Color Guard unit.
The State Flag Bearer carries the state flag alongside the American flag during ceremonies. This position requires the same level of respect and discipline, ensuring the state flag is presented with honor and precision. The State Flag Bearer supports the Commander and helps maintain the proper formation and coordination of the Color Guard throughout the event.
The Guards, also known as Rifle Bearers, play a crucial role in the Color Guard by carrying rifles and acting as the protective detail for the American and state flags. Their presence symbolizes vigilance and respect, ensuring the colors are safeguarded during all ceremonies. Guards must demonstrate precise drill skills, maintain proper posture, and stay alert at all times to support the Commander and State Flag Bearer. Their discipline and teamwork are essential to the professionalism and effectiveness of the entire Color Guard unit.
