Pay No Heed by Henry LeMasurier, 6th grade
Little Kids Rock Songwriting Competition Winner
K-5 takes music class once per week and Modern Band is woven into the curriculum. Students move, sing, dance, and begin playing the Modern Band instruments in Kindergarten.
6-8 students elect to take Modern Band and the class happens daily. Students learn how to play ukulele, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums, vocals, songwriting, and sound engineering. Throughout the week, the students play student-selected songs as a class, practice in small bands, we call mini-bands, and learn special topics to expand their understanding of modern music.
Similar to 6-8, 9-12 students elect to take Modern Band and the class happens daily. Students choose to play their preferred Modern Band instruments and NO experience or traditional music notation reading is necessary to join. High school Modern Band also participates in Class Jams, Mini-bands, and Special Topics. The common instruments played in class are ukulele, guitar, keyboard, bass, drums, vocals, but all instruments are welcome. Students also explore areas like sound engineering and songwriting. The K-12 Modern Band concert season ends with a big concert at a local venue like Old Town Square or The Downtown Artery.
