Summer and Pre-Course Reading

Class of 2028 (9th Grade) Summer and Pre-Course Reading MYP English 2024-2025

Summer Reading Required Novel:

o   The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Optional Novel:

o   Mexican WhiteBoy by Matt de la Peña

Summer Reading Assignment:

ü Read and be prepared to discuss The Hate U Give during the first week of school by bringing the book to class (an e-reader is fine) for discussions and in-class assignments.  You must have a copy of the book in class, so plan accordingly if you use a library book.

ü A few weeks into the semester in which you take MYP English 9, you will have an in-class writing assessment related to your reading.

ü We have copies of the book(s) available to borrow and we will distribute them to you before summer break.  If you prefer to get your own copy to keep, that is fine as well.  Contact Ms. Linnenburger at PHS amberl@psdschools.org  if you have questions.

Questions about books or assignment? Contact the pre-DP IB pathway MYP English 9 teacher:

·        Monique Eckhoff – moniquec@psdschools.org

Supplies for English class:

·        Highlighters, pens and pencils, colored pencils are optional.

·        Spiral or composition notebook: something you like for taking notes (100 pages).

·        Loose-leaf notebook paper, college-ruled.

·        Binder to keep track of course materials.  Nothing specific required; just have a system!

SERVICE in the pre-DP IB pathway:

IB requires that students participate in service as action for ninth and tenth grade.  You can start counting hours as soon as you are done with 8th grade! From June 2024 through May 2026, you will need to document 40 hours of service as a requirement for the MYP Certificate, which is required if you plan to move on to the IB Diploma Program.  This summer make notes for yourself about the dates and hours you serve, what organization you worked with, and what you did.  You’ll learn more about this in the fall.

·         What “counts” as service?

o   Serve a larger community:  outside of self, family and friends.

o   Service must be done as volunteer work, no pay or trade for work.

o   No class credit for service (unless the hours are served OUTSIDE of required class time).
