How families support their students at PGA
How families support their students at PGA
All coursework will be tied to a specific learning standard. Students are expected to show progress within a standard and feedback is provided from the teacher using specific comments and the 1-4 scale, which is code for:
Advanced: 4
Mastery: 3
Approaching: 2
Beginning: 1
Missing: 0
Teachers will use 1-4 as a short-hand for communicating how the student is progressing through a specific learning task and standard. It is critical to note that students are expected to move flexibly through the scale as they show their learning and growth. Standards-based grading is focused on growth, so students are able to add to their learning through revisions to demonstrate proficiency throughout a unit.
Students who earn less than Mastery (a 3 on the scale) will be asked to revise their work or partner with a teacher to improve their learning. At PGA, earning a 3 on the SBG scale is Mastery and something to celebrate!
Assignments will be categorized as Summative and Formative:
Formative assessments improve learning because they show students areas for improvement through practice and provide encouragement in areas of success.
Summative assessments are used to monitor the overall learning of a particular standard or skill set.
70% of a student’s final grade is based on Summative assignments and 30% is based on Formative assignments.
Within an SBG system, there is no “extra” credit. PGA educators focus on meaningful learning opportunities.
Missing/Incomplete Work
All missing or incomplete work is due by the end of a unit or with an individual plan made with the teacher. If a student does not submit their assigned work, they will see a “0” in their progress. A student is able to make an individual plan with their teacher if they need support catching up on a unit or task.
How Grades Are Reported
A student’s quarter and semester grades will be calculated looking at the body of evidence they have created over the course of a class or term. A student who has not demonstrated proficiency of the standards will not earn credit for the class. Standards-based grading allows the student and teacher to partner as teammates toward the student’s proficiency of a learning standard. If a student needs more time or support to reach proficiency, they are not penalized for it via standards-based grading and learning.
