Students chose to inquire into the local and global issues that we as people are responsible for. Students began with the process of identifying a need and the action that can affect the need or issue and how constant reflection and cooperation can help resolve problems (what it means to be human).
Students watched provocations and videos while thinking about how they would answer the following question: I am going to change the world by... and filled out the worksheet to get their brains thinking about different problems in the world.
Students used Jamboard to make a virtual web in which they brainstormed local and global issues connecting to our responsibilities specific to the Earth and our planet.
Students and teachers collaborate to develop the unit and its central idea together. Students looked at examples of previous central ideas from their K-5 journey through the PYP. They highlighted the verbs and nouns in these different examples. Then, in small groups, they wrote sentence strips using colored verbs and nouns (CVC; concept, verb, concept) to write and share their ideas for our class central idea. Once we had examples from each group we analyzed them and combined them into one class central idea: Actions and decisions have consequences that affect our planet.
Students were assigned groups and topics and began writing questions related to their topic on Jamboard. Then, they collaborated together to organize the questions based on themes by color-coding their sticky notes on Jamboard.
Within this unit, each student selects key concepts that connect to our transdisciplinary theme "Who We Are" to write individual lines of inquiry.
Form: What is it? What does it do? Describe it.
Function: How does it work? Why do we need screwdrivers?
Causation: Why is it like this? Why does it work like this?
Change: How have screwdrivers changed over time?
Connection: How are screwdrivers connected to other tools?
Perspective: Are some screwdrivers better than others?
Responsibility? What is my responsibility with tools to keep myself and others safe?
Within this unit, each student selects an issue or problem in the world that is of significant interest to the student, able to be researched, and meaningful to the world or local community.
