Reading:

Our reading program, Imagine Learning, addresses foundational reading skills: phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fluency.

Module 1  (1st Quarter, August-Mid October)

Note:

By the end of Module 1, Second Graders should be reacquainted with many of the long vowel patterns and most syllable types (closed, open, CVCe, vowel team, and r-controlled) taught in Grade 1. Students should be able to decode and encode one- and two-syllable words that contain these patterns and syllable types, along with inflectional endings (“-s,” “-ed,” “-es,” and “-ing”). Students should be able to recognize, spell, and read various high-frequency words (regularly and irregularly spelled) taught in Grade 1 as well as some newly introduced high-frequency words. Finally, as a result of a sharpened focus on fluency, students become more aware of the elements of fluency as they read aloud, including rate, phrasing, and expression.

Module 2  (2nd Quarter, Mid October-December)

Note: 

By the end of Module 2, students should be able apply learned spelling patterns such as “oi,” “oy,” “ou,” and “ow” to decoding and encoding words. Students will also be able to read, spell, and understand contractions using “am,” “is,” “not,” “would” and “have.” Students will continue to decode and encode words with common prefixes (“re-,” “un-,” “pre-”) and suffixes (“-ed,” “-ing,” and “-er”), beginning to tackle words with both. Students will be introduced and should be able to decode words containing word endings such as “-tion” and “-sion.” Lastly, students will continue to work on and reflect on their growing ability to fluently read second-grade texts.

Module 3   (3rd Quarter, January-Mid March)

Writing/Grammar: 

Writing and grammar instruction are embedded in both our literacy program and IB units. Students will be doing daily writing. We began with a focus on nouns (proper and common). Then we learn about adjectives and verbs. Students are working towards constructing a paragraph with a topic sentence, three supporting sentences and a conclusion. Also, they are learn about capitalization and punctuation.
