Writing/Grammar:
Writing and grammar instruction are embedded in both our literacy program and IB units. Students will be doing daily writing. We began with a focus on nouns (proper and common). Then we learn about adjectives and verbs. Students are working towards constructing a paragraph with a topic sentence, three supporting sentences and a conclusion. Also, they are learn about capitalization and punctuation.
Math
Our math curriculum, Savvas Math, focuses on conceptual mathematical thinking and Common Core Standards. The first grade Common Core Standards are:
1.NBT Number and Operations in Base Ten

1.G Geometry
Topic 1 Solving Addition and Subtraction Problems to 10
Students will solve addition problems by adding one part to another part and by putting two parts together to make a whole, and they will decompose numbers to solve addition word problems. Students will also solve subtraction problems by taking one part from a whole, compare two groups to determine which group has more and which has less and use subtraction equations to show the comparison. Finally, students will learn to find missing addends and show how they found it by either an addition or a subtraction equation.
Vocabulary: add, sum, plus, equals, equation, parts, whole, difference, subtract, minus, more, fewer, addend
Topic 2 Fluently Add and Subtract Within 10
Students will add on a number line by counting on from a number, use doubles and near doubles to solve problems, use a ten-frame to solve addition facts with 5 and 10, and learn commutative property where two addends can be added in any order to get the same sum. They will also learn to count back to find the difference between two numbers and show this in a subtraction equation. Finally, they will learn about the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction and use this knowledge to help them solve subtraction equations and word problems.
Vocabulary: number line, doubles fact, near doubles fact, difference, fact famiy, and commutative property
Topic 3 Solving Addition Facts to 20 Using Strategies
Students will count on to add on an open numberline, build fluency with doubles facts and use that knowledge as a strategy to answer doubles-plus-1 and doubles-plus- 2 facts, and learn the strategy of making 10 to add.
Vocabulary: open number line, doubles-plus-1, doubles-plus-2, make 10
Topic 4 Solving Subtraction Facts to 20 Using Strategies
Students will use a number line to subtract by counting on or counting back, use the make 10 strategy to make subtracting easier, use addition facts to solve subtraction facts using the same 3 numbers of a fact family, and explain strategies they used to solve subtraction and addition equations in word problems with unknowns in different positions.
Vocabulary: fact family
Topic 5 Working with Addition and Subtraction Equations
Students will be finding unknown numbers in an equation, determining if an equation is true or false, adding 3 numbers, and solving word problems involving comparisons. They will also be able to determine the missing number or symbol in an equation in order to make the equation true.
Vocabulary: addends, related facts, fact families, add to, put together, addends, take away, take apart, equal, part-part-whole mat, count on, doubles, near doubles, ten frames, commutative property, count back to subtract, think addition to subtract

Students will count by ones and tens on both a number line and a number chart, find place value patterns on a number chart, and write numbers on open number line to show skip counting.
Vocabulary: number chart, place-value
Topic 8 Understanding Place Value
Students will read and write numbers 11-19, identify these numbers as ten and some ones, write number words, show groups of tens, count the number of tens in a number, and understand that tens are written to the left of ones
Vocabulary: tens, ones
Topic 9 Comparing Two-Digit Numbers
Students will find numbers that are more or less than a given number, and use a hundreds chart to identify one more, one less, 10 more, and 10 less than a given number. They will use place-value blocks to compare two numbers and determine which is either greater than or less than the other number.
Vocabulary: more, less, greater than (>), less than (<), place-value
Topic 10 Using Models and Strategies to Add Tens and Ones
Students will add multiples of tens, use mental math to add tens to two-digit numbers, use hundred chart to add tens and ones, solve addition problems by using place-value blocks or drawings, make ten to add, and add two-digit numbers by using different strategies and showing how they solved the equation.
Vocabulary: mental math
Topic 11 Using Models and Strategies to Subtract Tens
Students will use models to subtract tens, use a hundred chart to subtract a multiple of ten from another multiple of ten, subtract tens using an open number line, use addition to subtract tens, use mental math to subtract ten from a two-digit number, and use different strategies to subtract.
Vocabulary: subtrahend
Topic 12 Measuring Lengths
Students will compare and order objects by length, use objects to measure length of objects that are straight and not straight.
Vocabulary: longest, shortest

Science and Social Studies
We begin the year with our IB Unit/Social Studies: Jobs: How We Organize Ourselves. Our central idea focuses on the social construct that through work, people can use their passion and talents to complete important tasks that often contribute to society. We explore why people choose different jobs, identify goods and services, and discuss the tools used,as well as the pay and perks from different carrers. During this unit, we welcome parents into the classrrom as guest speakers.
SOCIAL STUDIES First Grade, Standard 3. Economics Grade Level Expectation: 1. Individuals work in different types of jobs to earn an income. First Grade, Standard 3. Economics Grade Level Expectation: 2. Plan how to spend, share, and save money.
After our Jobs unit, we move on to our IB unit/Science on Plants and Animals: Sharing the Planet. Our central idea focuses on how people look to nature for inspiration (e.g. art and biomimicry). We also learn how the external parts of plants and animals have unique properties that help them survive.
SCIENCE First Grade Standard 2. Life Science Grade Level Expectation: 1. All organisms have external parts that they use to perform daily functions. 2. Young organisms are very much, but not exactly, like their parents, and also resemble other organisms of the same kind.
We finish the first semester with our IB Unit/Social Studies: Celebrations: Who we Are. Our central idea focuses on exploring personal and shared celebrations helps us develop open-mindedness and tolerance towards others. We learn about celebrations around the world and how different community's traditions are celebrated. Many holidays coincide with moon phases, solstices, equinoxes and seasons, so we also learn about these yearly patterns. Parents are welcome to set up a time to come in to share their cultural celebrations.
