15th - 16th Weeks (April 18 - April 29, 2022):

Learning Targets:

I can communicate effectively in Spanish for a variety of different purposes (answering questions in English about what I read in Spanish - interpersonal communication). Or more specifically, I can answer questions about "Brandon Brown" and his friends (the protagonist in our new story).

Success Criteria:

Please see Ms. S (or send an email) if you have questions or will not be in class for an extended period of time during this unit. We will read this book in class and then review for the PSD District Assessment (May 3 & 4).

Our book is called Brandon Brown quiere un perro and it is about a boy who wants a dog. We will still utilize supportive resources including Duolingo, vhlcentral and YouTube. We're in the final stretch! You can do it! See you in class! Gracias.


11th - 14th Weeks (March 21 - April 14, 2022):

Learning Targets:

I can communicate effectively in Spanish for a variety of different purposes (reading). I can show evidence of knowing more about another culture where they speak Spanish (Spain).

Success Criteria:

Please see Ms. S (or send an email) if you have questions or will not be in class for an extended period of time during this unit. We will read this book in class and then review for the PSD District Assessment (May 3 & 4).

We will still utilize supportive resources including Duolingo, vhlcentral and YouTube. We're in the final stretch! You can do it! See you in class! Gracias.

End of March - Review Definite & Indefinite Articles (in school & travel context), to set the stage as we begin to learn about noun & adjective placement in Spanish. The "casa bonita rule."

Beginning of April - Various Infographics. "Where might we encounter Spanish?" (Menus, etc...) We'll also start our last "novela" before the PSD District Assessment on May 3 & 4.

Friday (4/15) - No school.

For the weeks leading up to Spring Break:

We’ll read & finish Berto before Spring Break. Stay caught up with notes on our main characters and how they develop as the book progresses. Keep up the great work!


7th Week (February 15 & 17, 2022):

Tuesday (2/15) - Learn Valentine words and finish chapter 1 in Berto.

Thursday (2/17) - Apply at least one of the 2-3 reading strategies each day we read Berto.

Friday (2/18) - Continue to practice utilizing reading strategies with our book. Finish Duolingo.

For this week:

We’ll finish our skits in class (students who were absent), finish chapter 1 in our book & take a break to learn "Valentine words" in Spanish.


6th Week (February 7, 9 & 11, 2022):

5th Week (February 1 & 2, 2022):

1) I can describe Berto's friend in Spanish so I can later describe MY friends in Spanish.

2) I can show listening comprehension by answering "vhlcentral" questions.

Success Criteria:

Tuesday (2/1) - 10 pt. grade from next section of Berto.

Wednesday (2/2) - No school (Not a scheduled Spanish day, but a "snow day"!).

Thursday (2/3) - Thursday = late start (Listening Comp. activity) No new "Berto" grade but we'll do a couple "Listening Comprehension" activities on "VhlCentral."

For this week:

1. Leemos "Berto" (let's read the next pgs. of Berto) - up to p. 3 (2nd full paragraph).

2. Answer questions on "Berto" & turn in as ticket out the door.

3. Late Start Day (Thurs.) - practice Listening Comprehension from VHLCentral.


4th Week (January 24, 26 & 28, 2022):

Monday (1/24) - Finish skit & transition to upcoming unit which will begin with learning strategies for learning in a second language.

Wednesday (1/26) - Learn & Identify 2-3 reading strategies for reading in Spanish & begin looking at books to select as an FVR reading book.

Friday (1/28) - Read intro, author’s notes, id pictures/graphs & start chapter 1 of our book. Keep up with my Duolingo & “in class reading” (book/”novela”).

For this week:

1. We’ll finish our skits in class, then begin reading our "In class Spanish book.

2. Remember to stay caught up with comprehension activities & Duolingo assignments.

3rd Week (January 18 & 20, 2022):

Learning Targets:

1) I can present my skit & show cultural norms (adjusted for Social Distancing) from the video with Silvina Marquez (finish these).

2) I can read short stories (in the style of “Isabela y Ronaldo,” answering questions & drawing pictures about what happens in the story, as well as participate in a short "drama" (either by acting out a role or responding to written questions).

Success Criteria:

Tuesday (1/18) - Finishing & presenting skit is 25/25 pts.

Thursday (1/20) - Isabel & Ronaldo reading & questions is 10/10pts.

Friday (1/21) - Remember Duolingo is due each Friday & this Friday we have another story to complete too! Keep up the good work!

For this week:

1. Continue to work on skits.

2. Read similar stories (in length & content) - like the “Isabel & Ronaldo” short "drama" about which we’ll answer questions & act out the stories in a similar fashion.


2nd Week (January 11 & 13, 2022):

Learning Target: 1) I can have an introductory conversation & show cultural norms (adjusted for Social Distancing) from the video with Silvina Marquez. 2) I can read 3 short stories in the target language.

Success Criteria:

  • Tuesday (1/11) - Completing video guide & "cardstock" hand are worth 20/20 pts. Also, we'll complete a short reading assignment which we'll act out afterwards, called "Isabela y Ronaldo."

  • Thursday (1/13) - Writing & performing a culturally appropriate skit with partners (utilizing what we learned about culture in Argentina) is 65/65 pts. See "rubric" for further detail.

  • Friday (1/14) - Remember Duolingo is due each Friday & this Friday we have a story to complete too! Keep up the good work!

For this week:

  1. Utilize video & classmates to help prepare for skits.

  2. Use notes to add phrases to "Mano" (Hand) you can use for skit.

  3. Read the "3 versiones de Isabela y Ronaldo." Act out the story.

  4. Homework: Duolingo with 50XP points & Assigned story is due on Friday evening, Jan. 14.

Success Criteria:

  • Duolingo - Completing my 50XP pts (weekly expectation of approx. 20 minutes of Homework), on time by Friday evening is worth 5/5pts. (Duolingo grades are recorded monthly & in 20pt increments.)

  • Dia de los Reyes Magos - Rosca de Reyes Participation with the sweet bread and/or the traditional Shoe activity are enrichment activities that provide experiential learning so we can learn more about the cultures of Mexico & Spain.

  • Intro to next week's look at Argentina's Culture & "Cardstock Hand" assignments - Completing assignments (Argentina wksht complete) & "Hand" completed with required elements in color earns 20/20 pts.

For this week:

  1. Welcome back! ¡Bienvenidos!

  2. Duolingo time & announcements: Duolingo has a new format - let's look at what's new! This includes time to see the "Stories" that will be added for additional opportunities to work towards proficiency.

  3. Los Reyes Magos - It's time to put our shoes (real or a paper one we create) outside of the classroom to learn experientially about this tradition in Spain. After which we'll enjoy some sweet bread and learn how this holiday is celebrated in Mexico too!

  4. Semester 1 Review with new information looking in more depth at cultural similarities & differences (Case Study: Argentina).

This week we're finishing our "Persona Especial" assignment. Important note: we have been invited to have our work on exhibit at a local museum: Tres Colonias. This would be a GREAT way to show cultural proficiency & "show what we know" by participating with Spanish speaking communities in our town! What a GREAT experience!


Week 5 (September 13-16):

¡Hola 8th graders!

Learning Target: I can communicate about "high interest" topics in Spanish!

This means we are progressing in our new vocabulary & are now working on Slides 4 & 5 in the "Persona Especial" assignment.

This week:

  • Learn the difference between Tú & Usted and when to use each.

  • Learn about the cultural significance of "el 16 de septiembre - el dia de independencia de Mexico" at the end of the week


Week 4 (September 7-10):

No School on Monday (Sept. 6) - Happy Labor Day!

Learning Target: I can show evidence of having completed the first 3 Slides in my "Persona Especial" assignment. I have shared these with my teacher.
