Teacher Message

Welcome to 8th Grade English! I cannot wait to meet you. We are going to have an excellent year. We will start the year by building community and examining our identities as we launch into the reader's and writer's workshop, which I love! I have been trained at Columbia University in New York City in the workshop model methods, which I believe are the best vehicles we currently have to teach you the techniques that good readers and writers use. We are going to talk, read, write, listen, and collaborate as much as possible. We will write memoirs, argumentative essays, position papers, fiction, poetry, and so much more. We will read books of our own choosing, memoirs: literary non-fiction, historical fiction, realistic fiction, and just plain non-fiction. We will study the Holocaust and all the history that led up to it. We will examine how a whole swath of humanity was manipulated into following Hitler. It will not be an easy unit, but we will learn about what it means to be a human by studying this genocide. We will immerse ourselves in the beauty of poetry. We will create stories, and most importantly, we will grow together and discover who we are. I cannot wait.
