Music Scholarship Auditions
Most College/Universities will allow both Music Majors and Non-Majors to sing in choirs. Some will offer scholarships to both Majors and Non-Majors. You should contact your schools for individual policies.
To audition for a scholarship at most schools you will need to prepare:
2 Art Songs - Memorized and prepared for performance
Anything appropriate for Solo/Ensemble would work
If one song is in a foreign language that is even better
Take copies of your songs for the accompanist.
Sightread - Many schools will ask you to sight-read as part of your audition
Tonal Memory - Many schools will ask you to echo back melodic lines played on the piano
Music Theory Placement Exam - most schools will want you to pass an assessment to show you have basic music theory knowledge. If you don't pass you will have to take a theory preparation course.
When to audition:
Schools will offer specific dates, and you sign up for a slot on a date that works for you.
February audition dates are optimal. If you audition too early, they will offer less money then they could. If you audition too late, they won't have as much money to offer.
Do I have to audition if I only want to sing in the choir?
Every school is different. Some schools you have to audition if you are going to be in the music program, and will do their ensemble placement then. Many schools will have ensemble auditions the first couple days of school in the fall. So, even if you don't audition for a scholarship you could still audition to sing in a choir. So it is important to contact the schools you are interested in and find out all the specifics for those schools.
