Seoul
Event
On April 3, Yonsei PSCORE opened an event to Yonsei students and PSCORE interns to hear Maeng Hyo Shim—a North Korean defector, human rights advocate, and aspiring educator—share her journey from North Korea to South Korea. Ms. Maeng spoke about the violence and injustices she and her family endured while living in North Korea. Her lecture combined powerful personal experiences with a message about the strength found in love and perseverance. At the end of her talk, Maeng addressed the current state of North Korean human rights and the severe restrictions on freedom of expression.
Following the lecture, students participated in a Q&A session with Maeng Hyo Shim. Questions ranged from lighthearted topics, such as her favorite foods and culture shocks, to more serious inquiries about the support South Korea offers to North Korean defectors.
Through Ms. Maeng's visit, participants gained a deeper understanding of the cultural, political, and social realities of life in North Korea
