Event
On April 9, Yonsei PSCORE opened an event to the public featuring Dr. Ethan Hee-Seok Shin, who delivered an insightful lecture on North Korean human rights and transitional justice. The interactive lecture began with a historical overview on the North Korean regime, focusing on the country’s transition from a typical communist state to a dynastic dictatorship. Dr. Shin encouraged students to critically examine the country's official name– the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea– and explore the ways in which the regime diverges from the ideals it claims to represent.
The lecture also encouraged a discussion on the origins of international human rights laws, how they are enforced, and their relevance in addressing North Korea’s human rights violations. Dr. Shin highlighted the origins of international human rights laws, how they are enforced, and their relevance in addressing North Korea’s human rights violations. He also spoke about his work at Transitional Justice Working Group, a Seoul-based NGO dedicated to the documentation of human rights violations in repressive regimes. Dr. Shin explained how such documentation could serve as vital evidence in the event of a regime collapse, paving the way for accountability and justice.
