On North Korea as a Neighbor with Professor Henry Em
Special Lecture
Our lecture with Professor Em was an intimate and thought-provoking session. After individual introductions from each member, Professor Em guided us through the leadup to the Korean War, and then moved into the politics of the Korean War itself, vividly describing the hostility and fear forced into the hearts of Koreans as they watched their country split in two. He concluded by briefly touching on the state of current affairs, and how North Korea's postwar period led the state to where it is today.
Members had the chance to ask questions following the lecture and engaged in meaningful discussion. The greatest takeaway from this special lecture is that the division of the Korean peninsula was a long, painful, and complex process, driven by factors and politics completely out of the hands of the Korean people.
