On 2020/04/21 Massachusetts cancelled in-person schools for the rest of the year. On 2020/04/28 Brookline High School published Remote Learning: Common Best Practices. I support the best practices as follows:
I will post assignments on Canvas weekly by Monday that will be open until the following Sunday.
I have embedded a spreadsheet of Canvas assignments for all courses below (and linked it from the UMW CTE document).
I have scheduled weekly Google Hangout Meets listed in Computing / Robotics Distance-Learning Resources embedded below (and linked from the UMW CTE document).
I have prepared video recourses linked on this website for direct instruction / assignment clarification / question answering where necessary.
Remember, in the spirit of effort, engagement, and completion, it is always possible to submit something to a Canvas assignment.
Brookline High School published Remote Learning Components (http://t.ly/5eVRd), including Pass / Fail Guidelines (http://t.ly/rZyVZ), on 2020/04/14, which state that S2 will be graded pass / fail based on effort, engagement, and completion.
Whatever your grade for Q3, you can pass S2 if you complete all the Q4 assignments.
I will grade assignments 100%, if completed, 0% if not. I will provide feedback as assignment comments to on-time submissions.
I will post assignments through Canvas and each will include a description, exact submission requirements, and notes (if necessary).
I will post assignments by Monday, that are due on Sunday, and available through the following Sunday.
I want to wish you well and hope that you are managing social distancing at home with your loved ones.
According to the guidance from the Public Schools of Brookline, the letter from Interim Superintendent Ben Lummis, and follow-up remote learning recommendations from DESE.
"Following the Governor’s announcement that schools will not re-open before May 4, 2020, we are issuing additional guidance regarding district and school remote learning plans. Throughout the initial weeks of this crisis, our educational community has prioritized the health, safety, and wellness of students, families, educators, and staff. At the same time, districts and schools across the Commonwealth have been operating with various remote learning models for their students..."
I will be communicating with all my students and families in an ongoing basis through e-mail, Canvas, and this website. For all my classes, please be aware:
Your and your families' health and wellbeing are the most important things as we collectively come to grips with this pandemic.
I will support you in enhancing whatever learning you engage in — even at a distance. I am not as interested in assignments and grades.
Computing is a rewarding pursuit and I am here to guide you in posing and solving open-ended problems in computing and robotics.
This is an incredibly difficult time for all of us. We will get through this together.
I have also communicated course-specific messages for each class.
Onward! Stay well.
A quotation from the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland.
In these times of social distancing and emergency remote teaching, it is important not to be overwhelmed by feelings of (as one colleague described it), 'twice the work for half the learning.'
Onward! Stay well.
