Mock Caldecott 2022

How it Works

Our "award season" will run from the end of November until the end of January, when both the Brookline Mock Caldecott Award and the real Caldecott Medal will be awarded. Students across Brookline's elementary schools will learn how to judge picture books according to the criteria set by the American Library Association. We will then read and discuss ten possible winners published in 2021. After all this careful consideration, students will have a chance to vote for their favorite and the book with the most votes will win the prestigious Brookline Mock Caldecott Award.

The 2022 Contenders

During our last week of Mock Caldecott, we'll look at Milo Imagines the World and The Rock From the Sky and think about how the illustrator interprets a book's writing through pictures.

This week, we look at Mel Fell and Have You Seen A Flower? and consider the individual style an illustrator brings to a picture book.

How does an illustrator make a book's time and place come alive? Something to think about as we look at this week's contenders, Wonder Walkers and Watercress.

Week 2: Character

This week, we take a look at how an illustrator reveals a book's characters. Click here to see this week's contenders, King of Ragtime: The Story of Scott Joplin and A Boy Name Isamu: A Story of Isamu Noguchi.

Week 1: Plot

We'll kick off our Mock Caldecott contest with a focus on Plot. Click here to see this week's contenders, Hurricane and Negative Cat.

Caldecott Criteria

Take a look at these videos featuring past winners to learn about the criteria the real Caldecott Committee uses to examine hundreds of picture books and choose a winner. We will think about these same elements as we look at this year's contenders.
