Units 4 and 5 this school year were sister units called "Essential Research Skills for Teens" (reading) and "Argument & Research Essay Writing" (writing). For our first essay, the class collaborated on essay structure, evidence, transitions, thesis statements, and the entire writing process, and ultimately argued whether competitive youth sports were more beneficial or harmful to teens. After going step by step through the essay writing process with their sports essays, students were given the green light to select a topic on their own. These essays were completed with a lot of independence. Some essays are more informational, while others are more argumentative. Check out the variety of interests and blossoming essay-writing skills of the 7th-grade class.
