The BS Fisheries degree is aligned with the Level 6 of the Philippine Qualifications Framework (PQF). The program supports the policy of the government as stated in The Fisheries Code of 1998 (RA 8550) “to ensure the rational and sustainable development, management and conservation of the fishery and aquatic resources in Philippine waters (CMO No. 33, Series of 2021). The program covers the following fields of study:
(a) Aquaculture,
(b) Capture Fisheries,
(c) Post Harvest Fisheries
(d) Aquatic Resources Management
The BS Fisheries program aims to produce the following:
1. Globally competitive graduates in the areas of sustainable Aquaculture, Capture Fisheries, Post-Harvest and Aquatic Resources and Ecology;
2. Fisheries professionals imbued with high level of integrity, nationalism and ethical standards;
3. Leaders in their profession and respective communities; and
4. Professionals with knowledge, skills and positive attitudes in fisheries research, resource management, instruction, extension, production and marketing.
The offering of Bachelor of Science in Fisheries was approved last March 19, 2012 with Board Resolution No. 12-07, and offered its first year on June 2012. The development of curriculum was based on the drafted Policies, Standards and Guidelines for Bachelor of Science in Fisheries (BSFi) Program developed by CHED in 2016 and now converted to CMO 33, Series of 2021. It has a total of 190 units compared to the CHED CMO 33, s. 2021 which requires 173 units. The latest curriculum revision as per CMO 33, s2021 will be used for the next school year 2022-2023.
In consonance with the vision, mission and goals of PSAU to be the premiere science and agro-ecological university, the Department of Fisheries Science commits to produce competent graduates that will meet the needs of the community specifically in the field of fisheries. This was guaranteed by incorporating professional and technical fisheries courses in the curriculum and promoting research, extension and production in these areas that will help improve the status of the fisheries sector in the Philippines.
The use of various teaching strategies in accordance with the program curriculum has improved the program's teaching and learning quality. This is evident with the increasing enrolment and improved licensure examination performance. The program’s passing rate is above the national passing rate from the previous board examination. Students from the program are also awarded as Dean’s Listers of the University. Aside from that, works of students are published in journals, presented in conferences and are applied and registered for intellectual property right.
Presently, there are five faculty members involved in the BS Fisheries program of the University. These faculty members are graduates of Bachelor’s of Science in Fisheries from academic institutions with a “Center of Excellence” status in the fisheries. One faculty member is already holding a Ph.D. degree with specialization in Aquaculture. Meanwhile, the other four members finished M.S. in Aquaculture. Also, the faculty members are holding relevant licences in compliance to the requirement stipulated in the Republic Act 11398 (An act regulating the practice of the fisheries profession in the Philippines, creating for the purpose a professional regulatory board of fisheries and appropriating funds thereof).
The faculty members are conducting research and extension activities under the four major areas of fisheries science such as aquaculture, capture fisheries, aquatic ecology and resource management, and post harvest fisheries. In addition, two faculty members are involved in intellectual property registration and technology business incubation in support of the needs of the community for reliable technologies in the production of various aquatic species.
PSAU-BFAR Tilapia Hatchery
The PSAU-BFAR Tilapia Hatchery is a satellite station of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) located inside the University. It is equipped with tanks and ponds which aids in the production of tilapia fry and fingerlings supplied all throughout the municipality and other neighbouring towns. The facility also serves as an activity area for the BS Fisheries students during their Laboratory Activities in aquaculture related subjects and during the conduct of their thesis.
Show Room
Inside the PSAU-BFAR Tilapia Hatchery is a small building which houses 15 units of aquaria. This building serves as a “Show Room” of different aquatic species including aquaculture organisms and aquarium fishes.
Post-Harvest Fisheries Facility
The Post-Harvest Fisheries Facility is located inside the PSAU-BFAR Tilapia Hatchery. The facility is equipped with freezers, refrigerator and processing tables which is utilized in the processing specifically in the storage of fish and other aquatic species.
PSAU Inland Fisheries Project
The PSAU Inland Fisheries Project is consists of production ponds which is utilized the grow-out culture of tilapia. The project is also set to be expanded for the production of koi carp and other aquaculture species.
Food Processing Center
The Food Processing Center is a shared facility with other programs. This was funded by Senator Allan Peter Cayetano. This is a two-storey building which is equipped with rooms for baking, processing of meat and fish, fruit and vegetables and dairy. Smoke room and sensory evaluation room are also available in the facility. Product development and product acceptability of BS Fisheries students are conducted in the facility.
Feed Testing Center
The Feed Testing Center was funded by the DOST-3 and is accredited and licensed feed laboratory which is authorized to perform feed analysis. It is situated at the Research and Extension Building. The laboratory is utilized for instruction in the Fisheries, Animal and Crop Science Departments and at the same time served as an Income Generating Project for the Institution.
Animal Disease Diagnostics Research Facility
Animal Disease Diagnostic Research Facility is dedicated to the Agri- Fisheries sector, researchers, extensionists, students, academic institutions, local government units, government and private research institutions, and most importantly the Filipino Farmers and Fishermen. The facility will for a synergy among animal disease practitioners, modern equipment and leading technologies in promoting animal health of livestock, poultry, small and large ruminants, and fisheries. Thus, ensuring food security, safety, and sustainability for our countrymen.
Based on the recent tracer study of the College, most of the graduates of BS in Fisheries are employed. However, the majority are not involved in the sector of fisheries. Those employed in the sector are presently affiliated in government offices/agencies such as Municipal Agriculture’s Office of Tarlac and Pampanga, Pampanga State Agricultural University and Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 3. However, most are still working under contract of service.
The BS in Fisheries program passed the preliminary visit of AACCUP in 2019.

The 5-year Roadmap was conceptualized to set the direction of the Department for 2022-2025. The roadmap targets to enhance the performance of the Department in the areas of Instruction, Research and Extension. It is envisaged that this will help the Department achieve its aim of becoming one of the Centers for Development in the future.
