SCHOOL-BASED POLICY OF FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

Students are permitted to bring the following electronic items to school solely for use while traveling to and from school: 1) cell phones; 2) laptops, tablets, iPads and other similar computing devices ; and 3) portable music and entertainment systems, such as iPods, MP3 players, PSP, and Nintendo DS.*

Cell phones may NOT be used during the school day:

Cell phones may not be turned on or used while on school property.

Cell phones may not be turned on or used during instructional time, except for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit approval of the teacher.

Computing devices may NOT be used during the school day:

• Computing systems may not be turned on or used during instructional time, except for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit approval of the teacher.

Portable music and entertainment systems may NOT be used during the school day:

• Portable music devices and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used while on school property.
• Portable music devices and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during instructional time, except for instructional and educational purposes with the explicit approval of the teacher.

The use of cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems at school is subject to the restrictions below.

• Cell phones and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or examination.
• Computing devices may not be turned on or used during the administration of any school quiz, test or examination, except where such use has been explicitly authorized by the school or is contained in an Individualized Education Program or Section 504 Accommodation Plan.
• Use of cell phones, computing devices, portable music and entertainment systems and other electronic devices during the administration of state standardized examinations is governed by State Education Department Rules.
• Cell phones, computing devices and portable music and entertainment systems may not be turned on or used during school fire drills or other emergency preparedness exercises.
• Cell phones, computing devices, and portable music and entertainment systems may not be used in the lunchroom, locker rooms or bathrooms.

Confiscation and return of electronic items

In the event a student violates this policy, the electronic device will be confiscated and returned following a parent conference.

Discipline

Students who use cell phones, computing devices, and/or portable music and entertainment system in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy (“ISUSP”) will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

* Public School 85 and the Department of Education are not responsible for any personal electronic device that is lost, stolen or damaged while on school property. These devices must be secured by the student and should not be visible during the school day.

Las polizas del Departamento de Educacion de la Ciudad de Nueva York y la Escuela Publica 85 prohiben el uso de telefonos celulares y aparatos electronicos durante las horas escolares.

Recientemente, los incidentes por el uso y posecion de telefonos celulares durante la hora escolar han aumentado. Si usted escoge proveer a su nino con un telefono celular, por favor asegurese de que su nino entienda lo siguiente:

Telefonos celulares no pueden estar encendido durante el dia escolar.

Telefonos celulares y otros aparatos electronicos no deben ser traido a la escuela y no son la responsibilidad de la escuela en caso que se pierdan, lo roben o sean usado inapropiadamente.

Los estudiantes que usen telefonos celulares para amenazar, acosar o hacer bromas a otros estudiantes estaran violando las polizas del Departamento de Educacion y posiblemente de la ley.

Los estudiantes que usen telefonos celulares durante horas escolares son sujeto a las polizas de diciplina del NYCDOE.

En el evento que los padres necesiten ponerse en contacto con su nino durante el dia escolar, ellos deben de llamar a la oficina de la escuela al (718) 584-5275 o Ms. Aracelis Lopez, la coordinadora de padres al (374) 563-4843. Si su nino necesita llamar a la casa durante el dia escolar, pueden hacerlo en la oficina general.
