THE DOT BOOK

THE DOT

Written by Peter H. Renolds

The theme of Reynolds’ book The Dot is a story of a caring teacher who encourages a student who does not believe that she can be an artist; to trust in her own art abilities, encouraging her to be brave enough to “make her mark.” The student rises to the challenge by creating a small dot on a piece of paper. This becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, which begins a journey of self-discovery. She realizes that with courage, imagination and her own creativity she comes up with her own idea of Art. In 2009, a group of teachers began celebrating the anniversary of the book’s publication, September 15, as International Dot Day – a day for teachers and students to explore the story’s powerful themes of bravery, creativity, and self-expression.
