At PS 30M, our goal is to spark the full academic potential of each student. To do so, we provide rigorous and personalized academic instruction. We also partner with parents and the community to support the whole child.
It is all about intellectual growth. But also about the emotional and social growth of every child as well. Click here to learn about the service we provide for children with special needs.
Children should fall in love with reading and writing. With both skills, they can learn anything. They can also learn how to communicate effectively.
Critical thinking skills grow, too. We build these skills by discussing books read at home or in the classroom. Our focuses breakdown into:
Independent Reading - Students get to read for an extended time to help build great reading habits. And during this time, students also analyze what they have read, and they share their thoughts as well.
Guided Reading - We push students to read above their grade level. And, with a teacher by their side, students receive help with their reading. Our main goal is to help our students grow as readers.
Read Aloud - Our teachers encourage students to read aloud. This helps students strengthen their vocabulary, build connections between spoken and written words, and boost public speaking confidence.
Writing - Through writing, students can express themselves. Writing assignments range from opinion pieces to poems. We then review writing assignments with students to improve how they convey their thoughts and use grammar rules.
Reading for 3K to 1st-Grade Students - For the youngest of our students, we teach the basics of literacy - phonics. They learn how to hear, identify, and use units of sound that separates one word from another.

We teach our students how to solve real-world problems with math. Students learn standard approaches to math. But, they also learn how to develop their own approaches.
Doing so helps students understand math on deeper levels. From counting to number sense, and place value, we cover all core aspects of math.
Students also receive mini math lessons. These improve how fast students are able to think through math problems.
Students in the first grade learn about addition and subtraction facts. By the third grade, students learn multiplication and division.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. At PS 30M, students can learn about STEM both inside and outside the classroom at all grade levels (Pre K through 5). They are also able to explore science in our science lab.
STEM can also incorporate the arts. When it does, the term used is called STEAM. History and literacy may also be included.
A STEM education pushes students to ask questions and solve problems in the world they live in. Students do this using engineering design processes.
Students also use math and science to find ways to make science, math, and technology relevant to their lives.
Our STEM education includes a variety of courses that combine subjects such as:
Computer Science
Engineering and Robotics
Sustainability and Environmental Studies
Urban transportation and Urban gardening
Health and Wellness

At PS 30M, we follow Elementary Science K-4 Standards.
To understand the current social and political climate, students must understand the past.
Learning social studies is the best way to do this. It is the study of human society, social relationships, history, and politics.
And understanding it allows students to make informed decisions about their world. They can become engaged global citizens.
This level of awareness is important even for our youngest learners.
And with teachers guiding them, students can explore their natural interests in the world around them.
