KFA-P0 - Public Complaints/Concerns About Learning/Instructional Resources /Materials

SECTION K: School - Community Relations

The Board recognizes the students’ rights to free access to many different types of learning resources.  The Board also recognizes the responsibility of Teachers and administrators to select and use a variety of learning/instructional resources that are consistent with the objectives of the curriculum and appropriate for the needs of the students. (See IG)  The Board further recognizes the rights of members of the community to request reconsideration of the use of any learning/instructional resource, in accordance with approved regulations. [Ed. Admin Act 3(1)(d)]

While no one has the right to determine the learning/instructional resources for students other than their own, the Board recognizes the right of an individual parent to request that his/her child not be required to use a given resource, provided a written request is made to the Principal.

Objections to the use of learning/instructional resources made by parents, Teachers, and other members of the community to classroom and/or school resources are an important part of the democratic process and must be treated as legitimate complaints / concerns.

Learning/instructional resources shall not be subject to reconsideration solely on the basis of the views, attitudes, or association of the author.

Any parent/guardian who wishes to request reconsideration of the use of any learning/instruction resource must make such a request in writing to the Principal, on the prescribed form.  (See Exhibit KFA-E)

The final decision for controversial reading matter shall rest with the Board, after careful examination and discussion of the resource with school officials or others the Board may wish to involve.
