SECTION J: School Administration
The Board wishes to ensure that the rights of all students are safeguarded and that all legislation protecting the rights of individuals is abided by in the schools. At the same time, it is also realized that students have responsibilities as well as rights. School staff and students are encouraged to work together in developing greater student awareness, not only of students’, or individual rights, but also of their responsibilities toward others.
The Public Schools Act specifies as follows:
Rights of pupils
A pupil is entitled to
Receive regular testing and evaluation of his or her academic performance and achievement;
Have access to his or her pupil file, if the pupil has attained the age of majority, and
Be accompanied by a parent or other adult to assist him or her and to make representations to the School Board before a decision is made to expel him or her.
Responsibilities of pupils
A pupil is responsible for
Attending school and classes regularly and punctually;
Complying with the student discipline and behaviour management policies of the school;
Completing assignments and other related work required by Teachers or other employees of the School Division; and
Treating school property and the property of others employed at, or attending the school, with respect. [PSA 58(9)(10)]
