IJ-P1 - Teaching About Controversial Issues and Potentially Sensitive Topics

SECTION I: Instructional Programs and Services

Professional classroom staff will make the Principal aware of any teaching of controversial issues, potentially sensitive topics or topics contrary to established boundaries of acceptability for the local school and community.

A Principal may request guidance for the staff from the Superintendent’s department or the Board on the teaching of particularly sensitive topics.

Controversial Speakers

If a speaker has a topic or presentation that is deemed to have educational merit by the Principal, yet at the same time contains an element of controversy or contrary to established boundaries of acceptability for the local school and community, the matter will be discussed with the Superintendent.

A Principal or designate will be present at such presentations, and may adjourn the presentation at any time if the material being presented is deemed to be detrimental to the students or contrary to established boundaries of acceptability for the local school and community.
