IF-P1 - Curriculum Documents, Development & Course Outlines

SECTION I: Instructional Programs and Services

The curricula used by the schools in the Prairie Spirit School Division shall normally be that developed for each course and level by Manitoba Education.  (Curriculum Guides/Frameworks of Outcomes and Standards, etc.)  It is recognized that these curricula are the products of the collective effort of Teachers, curriculum consultants and specialists who have designed the curricula using experience and skills in teaching, knowledge of subject matter, and a realization of the cognitive development of children and adolescents.   These curricula may be modified to accommodate the learning abilities of children.

The Frameworks of Outcomes and Standards are to serve as a guide from which a Teacher will develop units of study, individual lesson plans, and approaches to instruction which will serve the pupil’s particular needs at a particular time.  The guide shall be used to map the logical sequence of instruction.

In subjects where sequence is important, such as Mathematics, Teachers shall be expected to adhere to the frameworks.  In subjects where sequential learning is less important, the Teacher may be given a greater degree of freedom in respect to sequence.

The Board supports the concept of curriculum development, modifications, or improvements from within the Division when the development has been based on thorough research and planning, and conforms to provincial guidelines.

It is expected that course outlines for Grade 9-12 be made available to parents and students to guide students’ course selection.  [PSA 41(1)(v), 58.2, 58.5, 58.6(d)]
