Also referred to as a Multi-Resource Facilitator or a Learning Resource Area Facilitator.

Immediate Supervisor: School Principal

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Certification:

Library Technician Certificate or Library and Information Technology Diploma, or equivalent.

Non-Certification:

Senior Years Graduation or eligibility for Library Technician training.  Such alternative as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Knowledge & Skills

(a) Knowledge of computerized library systems;

(b) good organizational skills;

(c) good oral reading skills;

(d) skills in supervising library activities;

(e) knowledge of and appreciation for books.

Type of Work Experience

Library experience would be beneficial.

Personal Suitability

(a) Good interpersonal skills;

(b) ability to work with minimum supervision;

(c) must enjoy working with students;

(d) must exhibit patience;

(e) must show initiative;

(f) must show a sense of discretion that respects the privacy and integrity of those with whom associated.

Function

Provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning learning environment, as part of a learning team in which the school community can utilize and experience available resources. The library will often function as a multipurpose learning centre for the school and requires a person with a child-centered and flexible approach to learning.

Description of General Duties

(a) Receive, classify, and catalogue written materials; advise the Principal of items due  for re-order;

(b) co-ordinate all circulation related to the library/learning centre;

(c) ensure that the necessary repairs to materials and equipment in the library/resource centre are addressed by making the repairs or by informing the Principal;

(d) deal with inquiries regarding materials and equipment available from the library/resource centre; assist students in library procedures in locating materials;

(e) maintain inventory control, including overdue books and records of lost or stolen materials;

(f) oversee the general neatness and attractiveness of the library/resource centre and its displays;

(g) guide students in learning proper library/resource centre etiquette and behaviour, and maintain a learning atmosphere in the library/resource centre at all times;

(h) attend inservices and staff meetings in consultation with the Principal;

(i) read to groups of students;

(j) supervise students in the library/learning centre;

(k) promote a love of books and reading in general, through special activities such as reading clubs, special guests, book fairs, contests, school themes and activities; promote the use of the library/resource centre and reading materials in the classroom;

(l) initiate activities/displays for Teachers that encourage use of library materials; rotate classroom library/resource centre materials;

(m) co-ordinate staff input in book and material selection for the library/resource centre; screen incoming books for appropriateness and refer questionable materials to the Principal;

(n) maintain confidentiality in ways necessary to protect the privacy and integrity of those with whom associated.

Description of School Specific Duties

The expectations of librarians will vary by school site and the time of year.  As a result of these differences, the actual job title may vary from one school to another.  Librarian, librarian technician and learning resources area facilitator are commonly used at this time.  These duties may include those related to technology, fundraising, working with community libraries, organizing special events, supporting Maker approaches to learning and assisting with blended delivery courses.  At each site it is the principal's responsibility to assign these duties.  This description should be communicated to the librarian by the principal before the beginning of leach school year.
