The fire of December 5 1949- charring yearbooks and classwork yet not memories....
In the fall of 1949 the class of '52 was born. The class was composed of over three hundred fifty students from various elementary schools within the city. After three months of school, on December 5, a disastrous fire completely destroyed the Cummins Building. This happened after 2:30 PM when all had left our classrooms. The school was now forced to be divided into two shifts due to inadequate classrooms. Our seventh grade group was split.
According to the Honolulu Star Bulletin in December 1949, Honolulu Governor Stainback was asked for $127,000 to finance a new Washington Intermediate School. The estimated price was for the cost of replacing the building, furniture, books and school supplies.

Crinoline Slips

Gingham dresses, skirts and blouses were very popular with the girls. Boys were also seen wearing gingham shirts. Both appeared to prefer pink gingham. Long torso dresses with crinoline slips (a stiff or hooped undergarment) and jumpers with Baby Doll sleeve blouses were popular among the girls.
