Dear Talbot Allotments Association Members
We will be holding our Annual General Meeting on Sunday 15th September at 2.30pm in the Trading Hut.
The minutes of last year's AGM and also the Chair's and Treasurer's Reports for this past year are available on the AGM reports page. Click on the News link at the top of this page and select AGM Reports.
This is your opportunity to review what has happened in the past year and help us make plans for the future year.
You will be able to make suggestions, ask questions and raise any concerns....
Do come along. Light refreshments will be provided.
Sheila Roberts
(Allotments Association Committee)
The sun shone as the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Jos Clark, officially opened Talbot Road Allotments first allotment show on the August bank holiday Monday.
She herself has a plot and volunteered in the shop in the past and so understood the pride allotmenteers felt about their hobby.
After a fortnight of torrential rain and wind many had wondered how much produce would be exhibitable.
We need not have worried - on display was a beautiful selection ranging from beans, onions, amusing veg and soft fruit to cakes (containing a vegetable), chutneys, flowers and allotment photos.
After a tense morning of judging by Mike Cook, certificates and prizes were awarded, including Digby’s beautiful turned wooden bowls and a cup awarded to the young gardener of the year, in memory of site rep Kev Tynan who sadly passed away this year.
He was a keen supporter of community events and the mental health benefits of gardening. He encouraged others to grow and it is hoped that this cup will be passed on each year.
Lord Mayor Jos Clark addressing the show crowd
After the award ceremony a ploughman’s lunch was served - this proved so popular that organisers had to run to the shops for extra supplies!
The afternoon saw people relaxing and chatting with fellow allotmenteers and members of the local community who had come along. Music was provided by local musicians James & Laura alongside tea, scones and cake.
Pauline, entertained us with her memories and history of the site over the past 70 years! This linked with an interesting display put together by Phil B showing photographs of the allotment in the past and it’s significant overhaul in the early 2000’s - from a pig farm to showcase allotments we are much the envy of other sites across Bristol and have numerous water troughs, a proper road and revamped secure site shop, run by volunteers.
The shop is open most weekends during the growing season and provides supplies to members at almost trade prices. It remains the focal point for community events, such as the show.
Thanks to all the organisers and contributors for a great day with a lovely atmosphere and we have hopes of repeating the show annually.

Our show is fast approaching! Have you got your best vegetables and flowers growing well and protected from all that nature is throwing at us this year?!
Entry forms are available at the shop. There are a few changes – the cake class is open to any cake not just Victoria Sandwich. There will be a class for preserves made by children.
Entries need to be received by 10.00 a.m. on the day.
There will be a charge for a Ploughman`s Lunch of £2.00 and for tea £1.50
Can you bring a small table, or a larger one for the produce to be displayed on?
We have a number of chairs in the hut, but please bring chairs if you are able to.
Help will be needed with setting up the competition entries, putting out chairs and if needed putting up shelters! Also help needed with preparing and serving the Ploughman`s Lunches and serving teas, coffees and soft drinks.
Could you bake some scones or cakes for the afternoon teas? Please bring on the day.
Certificates will be awarded in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class. All children entering will receive a prize. A prize will be awarded for the best exhibit in the show in memory of Kevin Tynan.
If you would like to display or sell any art or craft work, please set up a table.
Please help us to tell everybody on the site about this, as some have no access to the internet and their plots are not near the notice boards. Let`s make this a great social and fun occasion for our allotments.

• ‘be tick aware’ and remember that you could be exposed to ticks whenever you spend time outdoors, including when in your garden or the local park
• ticks mainly attach to animals, but sometimes they may bite you or your family
• you can prevent tick bites by walking on clearly defined paths, using insect repellent and performing regular tick checks
• some tick bites can result in infection, so it is important to remove ticks safely and as quickly as possible
• the safest way to remove a tick is by using a pair of fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool
• contact your GP or dial NHS 111 promptly if you begin to feel unwell with flu-like symptoms or develop a spreading circular red rash. Remember to tell them you were bitten by a tick or have recently spent time outdoors

Jayne, John and Sam were again running the community tea shop before and after the AGM, this time with a craft fair included.
It was lovely to see the arts and crafts from plot holders and local artists. Donations from that, together with tea and cake, managed to raise another £92 . This was in addition to the £350 already presented to The Matthew Tree Project from tea and cake sales.
Mark from the charity was given a slot at the AGM to tell us about their work.
They are really keen on the possibility of doing something more formal with us and would be in a position to be able to apply for funding for any joint projects (e.g. greenhouse, poly tunnel).
