Sean P Boyle, PhD

About me

I am passionate about conservation biology.  I believe that the success of conservation and management initiatives is contingent on the combination of strong experimental design, adaptive management, and effective education and engagement programs. I strongly believe that the way we approach wildlife research should be inclusive, not only in how we construct the demographics of our working group, but also by actively seeking to decolonize our work through building meaningful two-way relationships with Indigenous Rightsholders of the traditional lands upon which we carry out research.

My dissertation focused on the impact of roadways on wildlife, but I am broadly interested in the impacts of humans on wild populations as well as their natural history.

My postdoctoral work focused on a combination of basic and applied ecology. At Memorial University - St. Johns, I investigated the relationship between species occupancy and abundance, relating those inferences to wildlife management. At Carleton university, I continued this, but also worked on several applied conservation projects.

I also believe that as academics, we are people and that finding balance is important. I encourage and make space for my mentees to take time for themselves.  I love camping, hiking and canoeing, especially with my partner and our two young kids.
