High school is where it all begins. The classes you take in high school are very important, and certain high school classes are often required when applying to get into a university or a college. The classes you should be taking in high school if you want to become a particle physicist are as follows:
If you are taking or are planning to take those classes, you're on the right track.
*Classes available vary from school to school.
After you have graduated high school, you need to go to university to get a Bachelor of Science with a major in Physics or a Bachelor's Degree with a major relating to Physics. If you want to go to the University of Toronto to get your Bachelor of Science, you could go to the University of Toronto's St. George Campus in downtown Toronto to take the Mathematics and Physics program. The program lasts four years, and at the end of the program, if you pass and meet all of the program's requirements, you have earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical and Mathematical Sciences. To get into this program, you need:
After getting your Bachelor of Science, the next thing on your agenda should be to acquire a Master of Science. We are going to continue to go to the University of Toronto. Now you have to make a choice: Experimental particle physics, or theoretical particle physics? If you're interested in experimental particle physics, you can choose to do the Experimental High-Energy Physics program. If you would rather become a theoretical particle physicist, you can take the Theoretical High-Energy Physics program. Both programs last 3 years, and both programs will reward you with a hard-earned Master of Science. For your application for one of the programs to be considered, you need:
Once you have acquired a Master of Science, you are now able to find work. It is usually recommended to stay in school and go for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Physics, but a PhD is not needed to find work.
