5-4 Language Activities.pdf- Have your child read you a story based on just looking at the pictures
- Ask a simple question about a picture using:
- "Who"
- "What"
- "Where"
- "When"
- "Why"
- If your child has a favorite book, change the story while reading it and see if he/she notices it was changed. Ask what is wrong and what it should be
- Read a page and ask him/her to predict what will happen next
- Make a different ending of the story
II. Situations to Elicit Language- Kitchen
- setting the table (following directions and vocabulary)
- "Get 1 plate and 2 spoons"
- cooking
- "I need you to stir this. What are you doing?"
- "Get me the peeler, strainer and the big spoon"
- Bath time
- "What are the things we need to get to take a bath?"
- "Tell me what we do to get ready to take a bath"
- Shopping
- "Get 2 green apples and 1 orange"
- "Get the big cereal"
- "Get the juice that is heavier"
- "At the store I need _ and _ " When you get to the store see if your child can remember the two things
- When checking out, "Get the tomatoes first, and then get the milk"
III. Car Games (color, shapes, vocabulary, categories)- "Let's look for something blue, round, an animal"
- "Tell me all the animals, foods, clothes you can think of"
IV. Talking About the Day- In the morning talk about the things that you will do during the day
- At night, talk about what you did during the day in the order that it happened
- Talk about the best part of his/her day using complete sentences
V. Block Building Game- Give a word and your child has to tell you the opposite. If correct, they get the block and if incorrect, you get the block
- See who can build the tallest tower
- Start easy so the child can have success:
- on/off
- up/down
- big/little
- hot/cold
- tall/short
- boy/girl
- happy/sad
- open/closed
- black/white
- in/out
VI. Magazine- Look through magazines
- Find all the foods, clothes, etc
- Describe the actions that you see using complete sentences
- Look at pictures of people and guess what they may be thinking, saying
VII. Laundry Basket and Ball (prepositions)- "Put the ball ... "
- Start with easy concepts and then get more difficult:
- in, on, under
- in front of, behind
- around, next to, between, beside
- above, below
VIII. Rhyming- Tell your child a word and they have to make a rhyme with that word
- You can make this more difficult by having them give you a real rhyming word or a pretend rhyming word
IX. Guessing Game- Describe an item and see if he/she can guess what you are describing
- "I am thinking of an animal that says moo and gives us milk"
- "I am thinking of something you wear that you put on your feet and it has laces"
- "I am thinking of something that you eat that has a shell, you crack it to open it and you can eat it for breakfast"
