EXPERTISE

I'm a geophysicist that studies the impacts of global change on the functions of regional systems.

Specifically, I work with:

BIO

A Lisbon native, this is the city where I pursued my studies in Geophysical Sciences, at the Department of Physics - Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (UL). This 5-year degree included a final one-year internship, which I completed as a visiting scientist at University of Barcelona, Spain (2004). I was then awarded a seed funding from the Portuguese State to create a startup that provided services of applied geophysics, mostly in groundwater and environment-related projects for companies and academia. At the same time, I obtained a MSc in Environmental Engineering (completed 2009) from Instituto Superior Técnico, UL, and ended up dedicating completely to academia by engaging in a PhD in Earth Resources (completed 2017) at the same institution. During those years, I focused my research on groundwater dependent ecosystems modelling, improved by applied geophysical techniques. I later moved to Instituto Dom Luiz, UL, to work on soil salinity risk assessment using applied geophysical techniques.

Since 2019 I've been developing my research at Polytechnic University of Setúbal (IPS), mainly focusing on numerical modelling/digital twinning and monitoring of the subsurface for highly rebliable predictions facing climate and anthropogenic changes. At IPS, since late 2022, I'm also engaged in the development of the E³UDRES² European university alliance (European Comission funded) through research activities and through project E³UDRES² Ent-r-e-novators (Horizon Europe funded), on the construction of the research and open science strategies of the alliance.

Since mid 2023, I'm very involved in the creation of our new research center, called RESILIENCE - Center for Regional Resilience and Sustainability.
