Updated: 8/31/19"CBI relies heavily on missionary interns to support our ongoing ministry in Japan. This program is a great way to grow as a disciple of Christ and as a potential missionary. A person may serve with CBI for a summer, one-year, or two-year terms as a missionary intern.
The summer internship is great for someone who is wanting to learn more about missions in Japan and grow in their faith.
The year-long internship is an extension of the summer internship, but the additional time opens up more opportunities for ministry.
The two-year internship begins the same as the one-year, but the second year is more specialized, either targeting an area of expertise for the intern or full-time language study in preparation for career missions."
- Brett Rayl, director of Christ Bible Institute
The CBI Internship Program focuses on “3 Ms”: Ministry, Muscle, and Mentoring.
For ministry, interns will be given some training for outreach and discipleship and encouraged to build relationships in the city. Involvement in Heart & Soul events provides natural opportunities for new relationships. Interns are also assigned to a local Japanese church to attend and/or serve on Sundays.
Muscle refers to service projects for CBI. Projects are chosen to help interns test and develop gifts, but also to serve the overall ministry. Opportunities have included office work, book distribution, teaching English, team/family support, etc. Service always includes certain cleaning and volunteering responsibilities at the CBI building. Missionary interns are asked to maintain a servant-hearted attitude and be ready to jump in to help with any needs that may arise for the support of the overall ministry.
Missionary interns will either be mentored one-on-one or in a mentoring group depending on their stage of life, term of service, and number of other interns serving at the time. Missions is sanctification and our first priority for every missionary is that they abide with Christ. Mentoring is designed to help missionary interns grow and promote a fukuin no seikatsu (gospel lifestyle), which is central to CBI’s team culture and ministry vision. Mentoring will occur on a weekly or monthly basis depending on the intern’s needs, availability of mentors, and other factors.
Christa and I will be going as one-year interns.
One of the main reasons we are pursuing this is to learn more about the process of translating and distributing books. Therefore, I will be helping CBI's publishing house (CBI Press) administratively for the "muscle" aspect of the internship. I will also be devoting the maximum amount of time they allow to learning Japanese which is a total of 10 hours a week. Many of the staff members have small children that could use tutoring in math or other subject. I'll be gladly serving them in this capacity.
Christa will use her skills as a photographer and as a sole proprietor of her own wedding photography business to provide CBI with beautiful photos for their website and for their social media. She (and I) will also help the Baby English ministry. This ministry uses the platform of teaching English to small children through Bible stories and songs to build relationships with the mothers and share the gospel with them. Christa will also be taking a class in Japanese.
