Google 101

Did you know...

Your @utk.edu email address is also a Universal Google Log-In. Logging into Google with your @utk.edu email address (or for students, your @vols.utk.edu email address) gives you access to the G Suite for Education, which includes Google Drive, Google Forms, Google Sites, Google Docs, Google Classroom…...and many other award-winning tools that are currently taking hold in the education landscape - both PreK-12 and post-secondary. You also have access to unlimited Google Drive cloud storage by logging in to Google with your @utk.edu email address!

Additionally, UTK has approved Google Drive for FERPA-compliant data collection and storage. For more information about the G Suite for Education, check out these OIT references:

G Suite for Education: https://oit.utk.edu/google/

Google Drive Storage and File Sharing: https://oit.utk.edu/storage/

In order to maintain FERPA compliance, a Google Drive tool needs to be restricted to @utk.edu users. This means that in order to access these tools, you will need to be signed in to Google using your @utk.edu email address. If you are NOT signed in to Google using your @utk.edu (or, your @vols.utk.edu email address) and you try to access a Google document or form restricted to @utk users, you will receive an error message that looks like this:

Here's what you need to do if you get the above error message:

2) Click on "Sign In" in the top right corner. (Don't see "Sign In" in the top right corner? That's because you are already signed into Google, probably with a personal gmail account. Check out the "Switching Accounts" tab for directions!

3) Enter your @utk.edu email address (Students enter your @vols.utk.edu email address)

4) Click “Next” and enter your password. This is your same UT NetID password, and it changes automatically every time you change your NetID.

5) Click “Next” and you are signed in! If you are trying to access a form or document that requires a @utk.edu log-in, you should now be able to do so! Your screen should now look something like this:

If you are trying to access a link, you will now need to re-click on that link (or refresh your browser) to get access.
