Science 14

Course Overview:

Welcome!  I’m looking forward to working with you this semester.

Here’s the info you need to get a good start:

With a final term mark of 70% or better and 90% + attendance, you will NOT have to write the final exam! 3 lates =1 absence (careful, those add up fast!)

Passing the course gives you five credits of science for your high school diploma.

You can then register in Science 24 and finish your minimum requirement of 10 Science credits.

Excellent marks and work ethic may get you in to Science 10*, with a teacher recommendation.

What do you want?  What courses do you need? Know what you need to do!!

 Strategy:

These simple habits will help you succeed.

___ Be in class every day - on time - prepared to work. Catching up is hard on everyone, not only you!

___ Be nice.  Be respectful to everyone.  Have a positive attitude.

___ Work hard.  Set high standards for your work and exceed them!

___ Follow Wagner’s rules and our class rules.

___ Be accountable.  Be true to your word.  No excuses – they only hurt you.

You are responsible for your success – others can help, but the final outcome will reflect what you have done.

 Details:

What does “late” mean?  When the bell goes, you should be sitting at your designated table with your books open, ready to learn. A short class means every minute must count. Important information is sometimes given in that first few minutes.

If you are late for tests or a quiz, extra time may not be available for you at the other end. If you are late for a lab, you will have missed important instructions and you may only be allowed to watch the lab.

If you are late, come in quietly and do not disrupt the class. Ensure later that I marked you late and not absent. Do not interrupt teaching to announce your arrival.

IMPORTANT: All students will be required to write the designated unit exam on the date indicated.  Records will be kept and parents notified when tests are missed without a valid reason (e.g. school field trip, severe illness). Students who cheat on exams or plagiarize will be given grade of zero for that exam or assignment.

 Please:

1.  Be on time. Be on task. Bring supplies. (5 minutes owed at the end of the day for items forgotten or each 5 minutes of tardiness)

2.  Respect everyone and everything. Tidy your area before you go.

3.  No musical devices or phones. 3 strikes it’s mine policy – a parent will be notified – no exceptions – before the device is returned to you.

4.  Use calculators for calculations. No phones or other devices.

5.  No food or drink in class (except water bottles) and please wash hands after chemical use. This is not lunch/snack time.

6.  Your assignments are your responsibility. It is your responsibility to catch up on missed notes or assignments.
Talk to your teacher when you are unsure of something, if you have questions, or need extra help. If you are struggling, no one may know unless you say something.

Challenge yourself – don’t just assume you won’t understand! You may be pleasantly surprised!!

Exclusions:  If you need to be removed from the classroom, your teacher may send you to the hall to wait until he/she is able to discuss the issue with you.  If need be, you may be sent to the office to fill out an exclusion form and return to class as directed by your teacher.  When the issue has been resolved, you will be welcomed back into the classroom.

Marks:  For each of the four units of study:

Daily Work and quizzes 50%, Tests 50%

Final Exam: 20%

Our units of study include Chemistry, Energy Transformations, Biology, and Environment.

You have it in you to ensure that your science experience this semester is a good one!!
