CULTURAL COMPETENCE

Cultural Competency Training must include the following elements in a format fostering self-reflection and discussion where the focus is on deepening the teacher’s own frames of reference, potential bias in these frames, and the impact of these frames on students, students’ families, and the school communities”

  • Racial, cultural, and socioeconomic groups;

  • American indian and Alaskan native students;

  • Religious diversity;

  • Gender identify, including transgender students;

  • Secual orientation;

  • Language diversity;

  • Individuals with disabilities and mental health concerns; and

  • Systemic racism

Suicide prevention training should include:

  1. Current research on adolescent brain development

  2. What research shows about suicide:

    1. Risk factors

    2. Protective factors

    3. Research-based warning signs for youth suicide (www.youthsuicidewarningsigns.org)

  3. Teen suicide (myths vs. facts)

    1. Self-harm vs. suicidal behavior

  4. Teens and mental health (normal adolescence vs. warning signs and early onset mental illness)

    1. Communicating with teens

  5. What to do if someone is at risk (how to ask about suicide, how to respond and what to do next)

    1. Support circles and networks

    2. Treatment for teens, treatment compliance issues, issues for chronically suicidal adolescents

    3. Working with special populations (bullying and suicide, LGBTQ and suicide)

  6. Suicide prevention in schools (prevention, intervention, postvention and reintegration)

Free online learning opportunities for Ed MN members. Members can access our full catalog of professional development to improve their professional practice and earn CEU credits for relicensure as well as build union understanding and power.

The majority of courses will be pre-recorded. Some will be offered live via webinar and some will be a combination of both.

The Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Education, and Kognito have partnered to bring free, online mental health training to Minnesota schools. Together, we can build a statewide community of leaders who can support the mental and emotional well-being of all students. The training initiative provides free access to Kognito At-Risk for Minnesota districts and schools.

ASCD Professional Learning Services

Across the country, schools have been thrust into a hybrid learning environment where everyone is expected to adapt with little time or preparation. Distance learning is becoming a staple of our education system, and it’s crucial to help your teachers and students manage.
