The area around the site was put under a GPR after the Fall 2023 class excavated Site 1. It was discovered that there were more bones a short distance from the first site. It was decided that a new trench would be dug. It is currently at Level 1.
The Fall 2024 class works under a sheltered area, structured from wood and tarp. Under this structure is our two trenches, a work table that holds equipment, and two stations: one for recording a time lapse of the work we do, and the other for surveying the area the tusks are inclosed in with a GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar).
Across from the tent is a shed that contains tools used for excavation, such as dental tools, shovels, trowels, gloves, buckets, etc.
On Thursday, October 10, 2024, the class stumbled upon a fascinating discovery while further excavating the previously found tusk of Benny. While digging deeper into the soil pointy teeth were found, this is quite striking evidence of a Mastodon. Upon further analysis, Dr. Martin confirmed that the tusk in fact belonged to a mastodon, not a mammoth.
Mastodons roamed North America, particularly in forests, swamps, and grasslands. Though there is little information on them fossils have been found across the continent, indicating they adapted to various environments.
Mastodons went extinct around 10,000 years ago, likely due to a combination of climate change and overhunting.
