Every year, Princeville High School offers classes to upperclassman students who have an interest in technology or communications. For one class period, students have a chance to put their technology knowledge and skills to work. A mass communications course is provided for students to work on the school’s social media pages and other media tasks. Students are responsible for taking and posting pictures on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. They also craft flyers on the platform Canva to make announcements on the school televisions and social media to inform the community about student life. From posting school sports games announcements to pictures of students in different classes, they do it all! Another option is to sign up to be a technology intern alongside Mrs. Jenkins, District Technology Coordinator and Mrs. Bowermaster, Technology Aid in the tech department. These kids work on technology related tasks like helping fix faulty Chromebooks or organizing Chromebooks.
But simply working on Chromebooks isn’t all they do, they also bring attention to activities that the school offers. Taking pictures is an essential part of being a student working in the tech room, and you can often find them walking around both the high school and grade school snapping shots. For example, last week some of the mass comms/technology students volunteered and had their pictures taken for the Impact Life blood drive offered at PHS. They raised awareness about the benefits of donating blood and encouraged students and staff to sign up. With their help, students and staff donated 29 units of blood, saving around 119 lives! In addition, they take pictures of students in their classrooms doing different projects like dissections in a science class or holiday parties at the grade school. Chances are, if you’re a student who has been in the midst of something fun, you’ve found yourself posted on social media! Mass comm student Josette Benningfield says that her favorite part of the class is, “Taking pictures of different activities going on in the school,” and mentioned, “It’s really interesting seeing all the ways teachers try to make teaching fun and enjoyable."
So if you see any tech room students around school, make sure to thank them for all they do. Maybe they’ll even take a picture too!
