The scholastic bowl season looked very different this year due to covid restrictions. The practices had to be socially distanced, for example, and so things needed to change. To adhere to regulations, special cords that are longer than the normal length were purchased. These allowed the buzzers, and therefore the people, to be further apart.
Another big change was that a majority of the meets were held online through Discord. Discord allowed for a large chat between schools, and there is also a call feature. The moderator would be connected to the call and would read off the questions. To buzz in, the players typed “buzz” into the chat before the question was asked, and when they knew the answer, they would hit the enter key. Players could choose between typing or speaking their answer.
For a couple of the meets the team couldn’t be at the school, and so tuned into Discord remotely. The team had a group chat that they discussed questions on. While Discord worked it was definitely appreciated to be able to compete in person for regionals. The varsity team traveled down to Roanoke-Benson to compete. They advanced twice, before losing the last game. Great job to the whole scholastic bowl team!
